Even in the first days of the internet people found it necessary to share their thoughts and views with the rest of the world. Their need to do so has given birth to the blog, a personal or commercial diary on the internet. Thanks to the improvements in platforms and services, starting a blog today is easier than ever.

Today you can have a blog up and running in no time - and with just a few clicks. Services like Blogger and WordPress offer anyone the chance to become an author within minutes. Their services are perfect for the hobby blogger. But if you want to become a professional blogger, and make a living off your work, you will want to aim higher than free services.

The first step toward a successful blog is choosing a niche.

I write a blog about the services and promotions offered by the royal vegas. It is a real money gaming portal that offers its visitors - customers - a series of specials and promotions, along with hundreds of games to play. It has a desktop and a mobile version, too. It provides me with enough fresh content to keep my blog's pages filled with articles - daily and weekly specials, new games, big winners and so on. I chose this niche and I stick to it (I consider sticking to your niche very important for business). As a player, I always have new topics to cover, which makes my choice the right one.

When choosing a niche, you must consider your expertise, experience or passion. You can't just start writing about anything without knowing a thing about it - you will be ridiculed by your readers and considered an unreliable source of information. Make sure you know what you blog about.

Choosing a domain name for your blog got a lot easier with all the new generic top level domain names - gTLDs - that have become available this year. Now you can choose an expressive domain extension for your blog - like .travel, .accountants and others - or novelty ones, like .ninja or .xyz. This makes it easier to find a generic domain name with your own brands. Note that the majority of .com, .net or the other older generic extensions are mostly taken.

A final thought: don't forget to make sure your blog's functions work right. At one time I was surprised not getting any advertising requests on my blog. After about a week - quite a busy one, I must say - I found out that my contact form was broken, unable to transmit any messages I got. I still wonder how many advertising opportunities passed right by me because of it.
