Buy a Right Microphone

If you want to control your Windows 10 computer, you will require a good microphone to give your commands to it. Yes, of course, you can use your laptops or webcams microphone, but these microphones are for normal use and may not be a good option if you will use them to control your computer system. So, make sure you have a good quality microphone that works very well with the voice recognition feature of Windows 10.

Select Your Preferred Mic

Before you start giving commands to your Windows 10 computer, you must select the right microphone that you want to use. Otherwise, you want to be able to give commands to your computer. Why is it important? Because Windows can support multiple mics simultaneously, and if you don’t select your preferred microphone, then you won’t be able to control your Windows 10 computer with your voice. To do this:

1. Right-click on the speaker icon, which is located in your notification area.

2. Now tap on the “Open Sound Settings” option.

3. Next, select your desired microphone under the “Choose your input device” section.

4. You have successfully selected your preferred microphone for giving voice commands to Windows 10.

Activate Speech Recognition

Once you have selected your desired microphone, then the next thing that you must do is activate the “Speech Recognition” feature on your computer. To do this:

1. Navigate to the Cortana search bar and type “Speech Recognition” in it.

2. Next, tap on the “Open” button to launch the app.

3. Now tap on the “Start Speech Recognition” option to launch the activation wizard. Note: You may see a warning popup on your screen. If you do see this popup, then tap on the “OK” button to dismiss it.

4. After that, tap on the “Next” button.

5. Now select the type of microphone that you are using on your computer.

For example, if you are using your headset’s mic, select the “Headset Microphone” option.

6. After that, tap on the “Next” button.

7. Now follow all the on-screen instructions to set up your mic.

8. Next, you will be asked to calibrate your mic by reading a sentence.

9. After that, tap on the “Next” button to continue.

10. Next, tap on the “Finish” button when you see “Your microphone is now set up” message on your screen.

11. Now you will be asked to grant permission to Windows to read your documents to understand your vocabulary and serve you better. You can also skip this step by tapping on the “Disable document review” option.

12. After that, tap on the “Next” button.

13. Now select your activation mode.

14. Next, go through all the commands which are there in the speech reference card and tap on the “Next” button.

15. Now select the “Run Speech Recognition at startup” option.

16. You have successfully activated “Speech Recognition” on your Windows 10 computer.

Start Giving Voice Commands to Your Computer

Now you are ready to give voice commands to your Windows 10 computer. To see if everything is working fine, say “Start menu” and see if the “Start” menu gets opened or not. Additionally, train Windows to make voice recognition more accurate using the training application.

Conclusion

Setting up voice control is not that difficult but does require patience and some basic knowledge about the Windows Speech Recognition app. So, don’t become angry if Windows does not understand your commands accurately in the beginning. It will automatically improve itself with some training and passage of time.
