How to remove your Windows.old folder on Window 10

Some users have been complaining of the inability to remove the older version of their Windows 10 and install the new version of it. Here’s how to fix this problem and free up your space to store more important files.

Use “Storage sense settings” for removing the Windows.old folder

Use this Following steps from your device:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on System.
  3. Click on Storage.
  4. Under the “Storage sense” sections, click the ‘Change how we free up space automatically’ option.
  5. Below the “Free up space now” section, check the ‘Delete previous version of Windows’ option.
  6. Click the ‘Clean now’ button.

When you are done with the process, the folder containing the older installation of the operating system will be unavailable on the computer.

Use “Temporary files settings” for removing the windows.old folder

Or else, from the Settings application, users can remove the Windows.old folder by going to the Temporary files settings. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on System.
  3. Click on Storage.
  4. Under the “Storage sense” section, click the ‘Free up space now’ option.
  5. Check the ‘Previous Windows installation(s) option.

Note: You can clear the default chosen options if you just wish to remove the Windows.old folder to free up space.

  1. Click the ‘Remove files’ option.

After following the process, the folder containing the older installation of the OS will get deleted. This will free up 14–20 gigabytes of space on the system hard disk.

Use “Disk Cleanup” for removing the Windows.old folder

Here is the process for deleting Windows.old folder with the assistance of Disk Cleanup utility.

  1. Open ‘File Explorer’.
  2. Click on ‘This PC’ from the pane.
  3. Below the “Devices and drives” segment, right-click on the drive containing the Windows 10 installation (usually the C drive) and choose ‘properties.’
  4. In the “General” option, select the ‘Disk Cleanup’ button.
  5. Click the ‘Clean up system files’ button.
  6. Check the ‘Previous Windows installation’ option.
  7. Click the OK button.
  8. Click the Delete Files option in the confirmation window.
  9. Select the Yes option in the warning screen.

After completing the steps mentioned above, the Windows.old folder will get deleted from your computer.
