How to prepare for an efficient and fair divorce mediation

by Divorce and Family Mediation Services Helping families find peaceful and respectful solu

Divorce mediation is a process in which a neutral third party, a mediator, helps you and your spouse decide what to do in relation to your divorce. In a mediation process, you should select a mediator who deals with cases such as divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, etc.

If you have decided to go with the divorce mediation process, then hire a mediator to make it simple and peaceful. Now, you need to know a few steps that can help you prepare for mediation.

  • Understand your why: The first question you need to ask yourself is, “Why do you want divorce mediation?” Is it only for your separation with your partner or for the welfare of your kids? As you might be aware, kids can get victimized at the time of their parent’s separation, so if that is your priority, make sure they are top of mind throughout the process.
  • Know your facts: Before your mediator comes to a conclusion of child custody or child support, you and your partner need to submit all of your financial documents, which will serve as the basis for negotiating the settlement. The third-party legal representative can also assure you of a fair judgment for both you and your kids.
  • Know your rights and responsibilities: Understanding your rights and responsibilities is the main part of preparing for mediation. If your kids come to your custody, then make sure you take proper care of your kids and let the other party be satisfied with the decision as well.
  • Prepare your negotiation strategy: One thing you need to know before you negotiate is your end goal. At this point, you need to collect valid answers to a few questions you may have, including the following: “What are my requirements?” “How much child support do I need to give my kid a good lifestyle?” “Do I need spousal support to fulfill my requirements?” For this part, your legal representative can efficiently help you reach a fair settlement.
  • Adopt the right mindset: If you visit your mediator with the right attitude, then there is a better chance of getting your problem solved in an efficient manner. Divorce can be a stressful time; do your best to keep your emotions aside, be calm and patient and focus on ensuring that your mediation is successful.

Coordinate with your mediator, put some thought and consideration into what you want, and keep your emotions in check with a solid strategy in mind, and raise your odds of mediation going your way.
