How to Persuade Others to Help You Achieve Your Goals

by Vengel Consulting Learning That Matters

In order to achieve success in any business, goals must be met repeatedly. The person who has the skills to sell their ideas will be the one who is most likely to meet his goals and cause positive changes in the way the business functions. While setting goals and determining the pathway to reaching them is the key to succeeding in business, it is often impossible to do without engaging others to join in the same pursuit. How, then, can one person persuade another to help them achieve their goals?

Influence skills training is a valuable resource for any person, especially in a leadership position, who relies on their ability to use persuasion instead of telling their employees what to do. Even those individuals whose skills of persuasion come naturally can benefit from professional training to broaden their capabilities into different areas of their work. The relationships that a person builds with their alliances and peers can help them influence their decisions and actions, even when they have no direct control over them.

One of the most important lessons that any person will learn from attending an influence workshop or seminar is how to move quickly. Any business leader who wants to be successful must learn the techniques for getting what they want from people. This starts with the relationships that are built among team members so that they remain engaged. No matter how good an employee’s technical skills may be, lacking the ability to engage the rest of their peers in any project will likely cause them to falter.

No longer does the traditional hierarchy of employee, to supervisor, to management and beyond exist. The structure of business has changed, and telling people what you expect from them is no longer the approach that will lead to your desired outcome. There is an important distinction between influence and manipulation. When you are persuading others, never use aggression to express your needs. This will only result in building resistance in the team members you need. With that in mind, these are some of the ways that you can use influence to get the results you want:

·         Take care not to treat a group as just that. They are a group of individuals and you need to target each before meeting as a group. Every person has their own ideas, capabilities and concerns. These are things you need to know before the team members come together to discuss your project.

·         Make it clear to each member what the results are that you want to achieve. The only way they can accomplish your goals is with the complete understanding of what you are asking them for.

·         Include every member of the team in your discussion by asking open-ended questions. Give them the opportunity to ask the specifics that will focus on the particular issue or statement you want to address.

·         Encourage the team to brainstorm for multiple ideas and options to choose from. Make yourself open to their ideas and provide motivation through boundaries. Use private voting on appropriate issues so they are not put on the defensive. The more options they feel that they have, the more open they will be to the available possibilities.

No matter how effective a person in a position of leadership may be at their job, most have had more than one experience where they have been ineffective at using their authority to get their team to produce the results that were needed. A leadership development program that teaches techniques based on real-life scenarios that are similar to their own will provide them with a perspective of what it is like to be in the other person’s shoes and how their approach and use of authority can result in getting the opposite of what they are striving for.
