How to Organize the Inca Trail

The Inca Trail is a path that winds for about 40 km in the Peruvian Amazon forest, along an endless myriad of stone steps, which go down and up, and crosses three high altitude mountain passes. Trekking offers spectacular views and the unforgettable experience of walking the legendary lost city of Machu Picchu along the ancient Incas trail!

When to go on the Inca Trail?

It is possible to undertake this adventure in any month of the year, except for February: the path is closed for maintenance and heavy rains make the path impractical. The ideal period for trekking goes from June to August, when the weather is dry and dry. However, it is the most popular period and you risk having to face the path in the midst of numerous groups of hikers.

We tackled the Inca Trail in late December, on New Year's horse days. Although it was the period most exposed to the rains, we were very lucky: during the 4 days of trekking, a violent downpour hit us only once, at night, while we were sheltered in tents.

How to book the Inca Trail?

To be able to undertake the Inca Trail, it is necessary to rely on one of the many authorized agencies, which must request a specific permit.

It is possible to organize the excursion directly to Cuzco, negotiating the price and obtaining good discounts: we have found that the times to obtain the permit to access the trek are fast and often, to fill any places left available, the guides turn a blind eye. However, the places sell out quickly, so it is better to book early, especially in the high season, such as the month of August, where the path is crowded with numerous groups of tourists.

How long does the Inca Trail last?

The classic route of the Inca Trail lasts Short Inca trail with camping 2 days it is accessible to anyone, the hours of walking alternate with the visit of historical remains along the route.

Try to carry the bare essentials with you, so that you can carry your backpack independently and not further burden on the back of the porters, who will already have to carry the heavy loads of the tents, the kitchen and the food.

It starts with a minibus from Cuzco and after about an hour of travel we arrive in Chilca, at km 82, the starting point of the journey. After 4 hours of trekking we spend the night in Wayllabamba base camp.

The second day of trekking is the most demanding: in the morning it is necessary to cross the highest point of the path, WarmihuaƱusca, at about 4000 m above sea level, from where you can admire a breathtaking panorama. After lunch, continue to Pacaymayo base camp.

The trek continues downhill and becomes very relaxing on the third day.

The walk ends on the fourth day: wake up very early to admire the spectacular Machu Picchu at dawn.
