How to Mute a Tab in Your Browser

Nothing is more annoying than a tab suddenly playing auto-music or a repeating sound effect. Do you know that you can stop this annoying voice and give your eardrums some rest? Amazing, right? Here is how you can do that on Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Microsoft Edge.

Mute a Tab in Google Chrome

To mute a tab in Google Chrome, just go to the tab from which sound is being played and right-click on it. After that, click on the ‘Mute Site’ option on the drop-down menu. If later you want to reverse your action and allow the tab to play sound, repeat the steps.

You can also restrict sites from playing any sound altogether. Here’s how you can do it.

1. Hover to the three-dot menu icon that is in the top right corner of the screen and select ‘Settings’ on the drop-down menu.

2. Now, click on ‘Privacy and Security’ on the Settings page.

3. Then select ‘Site Settings’.

4. Scroll down the list and choose ‘Additional Content Settings’.

5. Select Sound.

6. Choose the sites you want to mute or unmute. Use the toggle switch to on or off the audio. You can also manually add sites you want to mute.

Mute a Tab in Mozilla Firefox

The process to mute a tab is similar in Firefox and Google Chrome. To mute a tab, go to the tab and tap the small speaker icon. A strikethrough will appear over the icon to show it’s now muted. Otherwise, you can also right-click the Firefox tab producing sound, then tap on the ‘Mute Tab’ option. To reverse the action, repeat the given steps.

Just like in Chrome, you can also restrict sites from producing auto-music.

1. Go to the three-bar icon located at the top right corner and select ‘Options’ if it is Windows or Preferences if it is macOS, on the drop-down menu.

2. Choose ‘Privacy and Security’ on the left.

3. Go to the ‘Permissions’ section in the list and click on ‘Settings’ located next to ‘Autoplay’.

4. Tap on ‘Block Audio’ that appears beside ‘Default for All Websites’ on the drop-down menu.

5. Save Changes to complete.

Mute a Tab in Safari

Safari is a popular browser in macOS, and functions similar to Chrome and Firefox, allowing you to mute a tab easily. Find the ‘Speaker’ icon, placed at the right of the website’s name on the tab, and click on it to mute. Otherwise, tap the ‘Speaker’ icon next to the website’s address to mute the tab. You can also right-click on a tab, and then choose ‘Mute Tab’ on the drop-down menu. To bring back the audio repeat these steps.

If you want to mute other tabs playing music, right-click on the ‘Speaker’ icon in the ‘Smart Search’ field and press ‘Mute Other Tabs’ on the drop-down menu.

Mute A Tab In Opera

The Opera web browser also follows the same method as other applications. Again, you just need to find the ‘Speaker’ icon and tap on it to mute the tab. Else, right-click on the tab and choose ‘Mute Tab’. To unmute, repeat the same steps. One different feature that Opera has is the ability to ‘Mute Other Tabs’ just by right-clicking on a tab. It is a good and quick feature when you want to focus only on one tab.

Mute a Tab in Microsoft Edge (EdgeHTML)

EdgeHTML is now an old version of Microsoft Edge. So if you update your Windows 10 to version 2004 which is the May 2020 update, this version of Microsoft’s browser will not be available. It is now replaced by Google’s Chromium open-source code. However, here are the instructions for the original version if you do not want to update Windows 10.

To mute a tab, click on the ‘Speaker’ icon placed beside the site’s name in the tab. When muted, you will see a cross sign next to the speaker icon, indicating that there is no sound. If you want to unmute, click the Speaker icon again. Otherwise, you can right-click on the tab and choose ‘Mute Tab’ on the drop-down menu.

Mute a Tab in Microsoft Edge (Chromium)

Microsoft’s latest version of Edge Chromium is based on Google’s Chromium open-source code, making it closer to Chrome. Therefore, as in Chrome, you can click on the ‘Speaker’ icon next to the website’s name in the tab to mute or unmute. Apart from this, you can also right-click on the tab and select ‘Mute Tab’ from the drop-down menu.

To restrict sites from playing sounds altogether, follow these steps:

1. Go to the three-dot Ellipsis icon at the top right corner and choose ‘Settings’ on the drop-down menu.

2. Now, click on ‘Site Permissions’.

3. From the list, scroll down to select ‘Media Autoplay’.

4. Go to ‘Control if Audio and Video Automatically Play on Sites’, and tap on ‘Limit’ from the drop-down menu. This way, the media will be blocked from all the tabs you previously blocked.
