Roads connect a nation and keep it going. In India alone, millions of people travel distances via roads on everyday basis. India has a road network of more than 5,472,144 kilometers. It boasts about the second largest road network in the world, consisting a mix of highways and narrow or unpaved roads. The unpaved roads are worked upon and more than half of these have been paved till now. Road development is on the go in India as it is vital for its economy.

Since, a large section of society uses road transport to reach from one part of the country to another, there are lots of cases of road accidents that occur throughout. According to the statistics, over 1,37,000 people were killed in road accidents in the year 2013 alone. In India, it has been noted that one death is recorded due to road accidents every five minutes.

LED Street Lights

Following are the ways by which the number of road accidents can be reduced:

1. Proper illumination:

A large number of road accidents occur due to improper lighting. Installation of LED street lights on all roads, ranging the ones in rural to urban regions, results in better visibility, thus, lesser cases of road accidents. Some of the benefits of opting for LED street lights rather than the conventional ones are:

  • These are weather resistant
  • These have longer service life
  • These do not cause any kind of threat to the environment
  • These do not require maintenance or replacement for a longer period of time.

2. Sticking to road safety rules:

To avoid road accidents, every nation has its own set of road safety rules. Some of the road safety rules are same for almost all the countries, while there are some that are specific for particular nations. These road safety rules help to avoid accidents as much as possible.

3. Avoid drunken driving

Drunken driving is one of the many causes of road accidents. Make it a habit not to go behind the steering wheel if you are drunk - this can save the life of others and yours as well. Be responsible while driving as that can only bring a change and lessen the graph of the accidents occurrence.

4. Be courteous while driving:

As you are not the only one driving on the road, thus, be considerate enough to respect and give space to others too. Share roads with all gently and don’t drive with rage. Do not overtake from the wrong side or misbehave with others. Smooth driving is synonymous with safe driving.

These are some of the ways to avoid accidents in India. Moreover, it is high time now that India should quit the conventional lighting products and should really go for LED street lights to illuminate highways, lanes and roads.
