Heart attack or cardiac arrest is a growing concern and one of the leading causes of death amongst many adults in India. Many times heart problems do not show clear symptoms, which further worsens the situation.

Most often, people tend to ignore the early signs of a heart attack. They dismiss stomach pain, fainting, and nausea thinking of this to be normal indigestion or flu.

 

In case of a heart attack, a blockage occurs in the part of the heart muscle or the vein preventing it from getting the supply of Oxygen rich-blood essential for its functioning. The longer the heart fails to receive the oxygen-enriched blood the risk of permanent damage is more.

  • Severe pain or squeezing sensation in the center of the chest extending more than fifteen minutes.
  • Pain radiating up to the neck, back, stomach and jaw.
  • Rapid palpitation of heart accompanied by shortness of breath.
  • Lightheadedness, vomiting sensation, nausea, and dizziness.


Heart attack in men and women:


Chest pain is one common similarity of a heart attack in both men and women. But women are prone to experiencing nausea, shortness of breath, vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Again, silent heart attacks are more common amongst women than men, increasing the risk further.

 

Silent heart Attack:


A silent heart attack occurs when blood flow to the particular section of the heart is blocked off, creating permanent damage to heart if not treated on time. Common symptoms include:


  • Indigestion, burning sensation in the chest
  • Unimaginable excessive weakness and fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness

  • Active people will not suffer from heart attack is one of the most common myth, since it can happen to anyone at any time.
  • Heart attacks show sudden and intense symptoms
  • Heart attack is genetic and I am bound to have it.
  • Heart attack usually happens to elderly people and adults will not face a heart attack is also a myth. The impounding level of work stress and unhealthy lifestyle is a common reason for heart attack at a young age.

 

What to do in case of a heart attack:


  • Immediately call an ambulance and go for heart attack treatment, without any delay
  • Never take the risk of driving alone to the hospital for heart attack treatment. The reason being you may further jeopardize your condition and pose a threat to others driving on road.
  • Chew an aspirin if you are not allergic to it and if the doctor has prescribed you one.
  • Chew a nitroglycerine tablet if you have been prescribed one by the doctor.
  • Immediately start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in case anyone is unconscious due to cardiac arrest.

Although some factors are uncontrollable, the risk of a heart attack could be delayed or prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Factors that pose you at a high risk of heart attack are High BP, diabetes and high cholesterol. With regular exercise, medications and a healthy diet, you can improve your heart health significantly. In case you suffer from a heart attack and see the early symptoms do not ignore. The risk of damage increases with the delay in time.
