by Atelier J. Blogger

Couches are the best spot to go lay down after a long day. It is the spot where we relax, talk, sleep or make important decisions. Most importantly couches and sofas are the first spot that our guests head to when they come. So it is more like a first impression. After all it is placed in the living room where everyone can see. Talking about pets, it is their favorite place to hang out too, unless you don’t allow them too. All these sofas, couches, armchairs and cushions come under the category of upholsteries, that is, a furniture that has a coat of fabric on it. Not only fabric, but it has sponges, springs and foams.

Through times sofas and couches have been our sleeping space too. We tend to use them for everything. Mostly we might we eat or drink while we are on it and most of the time our eyes will be on the television. Then there are a lot of chances that the food or drink will be spilled. Not only food, stains can happen because of ink, paint, nail polish etc. These stains and dirt must be removed immediately or else they will bleed into the inner sponges or foams making it harder to clean.

Apart from stain and dirt, dust can accumulate easily on a sofa. Even if you are not using it. Just give the couch or sofa a tap with bare hands then you will see dust in the air. If you have pets then along with dust pet hair will also be found which has to be removed using different measures other than the ones for stains and dusts.

Below are Some Tips and Tricks to Keep your Sofas and Couches Clean and Free from Dust:

How to Remove Stains

  1. Using Vinegar: - To remove regular dirt and stain use vinegar. Before using vinegar make sure you get rid of all the dust particles by either vacuuming it or dusting it manually with a duster. Mix some parts of vinegar with water, dip a clean cloth into the solution and wipe the whole surface of the sofa. Reach every corner and take out the seat cushions and wipe the bottom surfaces. Vinegar might leave a smell when it dries. It should not bother much but if it does then just spray some spirits of room freshener or give it a wipe again using some fabric conditioner mixed in water. This can be used to remove food stains also when it is followed up with a wipe of soap and water to remove the grease. Wait for the upholstery to dry completely before using it again. Put on the fans on full blow or move the sofa to a place where there is enough sunlight.

  2. Baking Soda: - Coffee and wine are two of the most probable stains that can happen and they are pretty stubborn too. To remove it use baking soda. Baking soda will be there with almost everyone. Mix a few spoons of baking soda with enough water so as to make it into a paste. Wipe the stained area with the help of Damp cloth and apply the paste. Leave it for a couple of hours until it dries or it is even better if you leave it overnight. Once it dries vacuum it off or dust it off with a duster. This must help in Upholstery dust removal.

  3. Rubbing Alcohol: - If the stain is due to ink from pens and markers or it is because of nail polish then rubbing alcohol will come to your rescue. Rubbing alcohol must be available in any drug store. Pour a few drops of alcohol on the stain. Using an Upholstery sanitization cloth just press over the stain and give it a mild rub. Do not rub vigorously as it worsens the condition by spreading the stain all over the place. Once the stain is gone, clean it with soap and water just as a safety against any grease being left behind.

  4. Getting Dusts Off: - Dust will accumulate on the sofa even if you are not using it. If you find yourself constantly sneezing then it is probably because you have dust allergy and you upholsteries might have collected dust. To remove dust you can always follow the traditional way of hitting the cushions with a tennis bat or a similar object. This along with vacuuming must help you get rid of dusts.

Another way is to wash the cushion covers and dry clean the sponges and foams. This must be done at least once in 6 months.
