Finding and defining your personal style is elusive business. It takes a whole lot of trial and error, experimenting and exploration but that’s the fun in fashion! Your personal style is essentially a visual expression of your fashionable self, and the road to finding it is one of self-discovery.
We recommend keeping it comfortable by evolving your current style into a more polished variation. However, if you don’t think your current closet captures your very essence and you would prefer a drastic style overhaul, more power to you!

Read on to find out how to find your personal style, one that is quintessentially you!

Take Note of Common Elements in Your Closet

Take a good look at your closet and see if you are able to identify a common denominator style-wise. Take note of the colours, patterns or cuts that seem to influence your closet. This should give you a general gist of the kind of style you naturally veer towards. If you are having trouble identifying your current style because of your overwhelmingly cluttered closet, pull five to ten of your most favorite pieces and go forward from there.

Curate Your Closet

It is the last thing your inner-fashionista would like to hear but here goes: Cleaning out your closet will help you find your personal style. Clearing out the clutter will give way to a more carefully curated selection of fashionable pieces that fits your style. Feeling overwhelmed? Check out this article*** for all the tips you’ll need to help you get rid of all that clutter.

Define Your Aspirational Style

An easy way to find your personal style is to seek inspiration from your style icons. It will help you define and better articulate what you want your style to evolve into. For most people, finding one style icon that speaks to their preference is near-impossible, so go for a mix! For example, my aspirational style is a mix of Rihanna meets Kendall Jenner, with a dash of Kate Bosworth.

If You Like it, Put a Pin on It

I love Pinterest as a fashion resource and it’s a great way for you to analyse the kind of style that gets you inspired. Create a “Style Inspiration” board and pin images from fashion blogs, editorial spreads and even paparazzi snaps that stand out to you. Chances are you’ll find a common theme that runs through your board.

Create Your Style Dictionary

Grab a notepad and jot down all the common themes, elements and style aspects throughout your closet, your style icons and your Pinterest. Write down words that describe your style; these are your style buzzwords.

If you like the Jacquemus Striped Asymmetric Dress, your style buzzwords are likely to be: resort, alluring, chic, contemporary or minimal.

If you like the Moschino Jersey Dress, your style buzzwords are likely to be: urban, sporty, quirky, bold or dramatic.

If you like the DSquared2 Printed Dress, your style buzzwords are likely to be: bohemian, colourful, bold and laid-back.

If you like the P.A.R.O.S.H. Casongil Dress , your style buzzwords are likely to be: feminine, classic, romantic or alluring.

If you like the Givenchy Dress, your style buzzwords are likely to be: edgy, contemporary, rock chic or bold.

Shop Smarter

Keep your Pinterest board in mind (or keep it open in a tab while you’re shopping online) so you’re always aware of what pieces to look out for. Even better, create a shopping list on your iPhone of your key signature pieces. Enter your style buzzwords right at the top of the list to keep yourself in check. Au revoir, hasty impulse purchases!

Go with the Style Flow

Your personal style should encapsulate the essence of you. It is a celebration of what makes you feel confident, beautiful and comfortable. An important aspect to always remember is that personal style, as it is with fashion, in general, is ever evolving. Don’t stunt the creative style flow by shirking away from experimenting with colours, patterns and prints!
