How To Find The Best Chipper Shredder For Your Backyard Maintenance

by Alice Stewart Interior Designer and Copywriter

Many gardeners have found chipper shredders to be an extremely useful tool in keeping their backyards under control, as they can be used to turn any sort of waste into mulch and compost. Because the popularity of these machines has led to a considerable increase in the number on the market, it can actually be quite difficult to decide which one will be best for your home. By taking the time to choose the right sort of shredder, you can rest assured that gardening will no longer be a chore that you avoid doing.

·         Know your waste

The first thing that you must do in choosing a chipper for your home is to have a clear idea of the sorts of garden waste you will be putting through it. Leaves, small twigs, non-stemmed garden waste, hay and straw are listed as being ‘shreddable’, whilst larger twigs, branches, bush prunings and cornstalks are said to be ‘chippable’. You should also decide whether you are likely to be working with fresh or dry waste, as this will also play a role in the type of machine you should choose.

·         Know your volume
The second thing that you must do in choosing a chipper shredder is come to a conclusion about how much garden waste you are likely to see in a single month or so. If you live on a few acres, for example, it’s likely that you will have a large volume of waste to dispose of each month, so a large machine would be much more efficient. If you have barely a backyard to speak of, a small machine will do the job just fine. You will need to be able to chew through all of the waste with ease.

·         Know the power, capacity and mobility
The third thing that you must do in choosing a chipper shredder is to gain an understanding of its power, capacity and mobility, as this will help you to determine whether it is suitable for your needs or not. Most machines are powered by an internal combustion engine that operates via petrol or diesel, but there are electric models available. You should also look into the chipping capacity of the hopper and the horsepower of the machine, as you don’t want something too powerful.

·         Know your eyesight
The fourth thing that you must do in choosing a shredder for your home is to make sure that you have the appropriate eye protection, as tiny bits of debris are known to fling out and can cause some serious damage. You need to make sure that you are wearing safety glasses or, better yet, a hard hat that features a full-face shield. If you wear glasses or contacts on a daily basis, make sure that you are always wearing them when using the machine to ensure that you can see.

The great news is that it is possible to find great quality chipper shredders almost anywhere that outdoor power products are sold. Just make sure that you pay attention to each of the above points before you begin shopping so that you can rest assured that you are making the right chipper choice in store. And just to recap, you will need to know how what garden waste you are likely to have, how much you need to get rid of, the capacity and power you need, and how to protect your eyes at all times.
