How to Extend the Life of Cut Flowers That You Buy?

by Peter J. Blogger

Flowers are a great item to decorate any room. But there are some do’s and don’ts which you should follow if you want to extend the life of these cut flowers for decoration.

Fresh cut flowers may brighten up any room. Here are some simple steps, which you can follow if you want to prolong the display.

  • Try to purchase flowers in Morwell from a vendor that has a high turnover. Reputed vendors usually provide fresh flowers.
  • Flowers that have brown edges will dry out faster. So, go for another bunch when buying. Remove the petals or wilted leaves and foliage once you get the flowers delivered at your home.
  • These natural creations require a paper wrapper or cellophane to be covered with in the transit because that will protect them from too much of cold or heat. Place them in water as soon as you get them delivered.
  • If it is a long way, you can bring a bucket of water in your car and place those beautiful aromatic pieces in it. If carrying water is a bit problematic, just use damp paper towels and wrap the cut ends of stem by it.
  • Before using the vase to keep fresh flowers, wash it in a soapy, hot water and rinse well. This will remove microorganisms and keep the water clean.
  • Remove those leaves from stems, which you think might get submerged. Leaves may decay underwater and bacteria may develop to plug ends of flower stems thereby preventing them from absorbing the water.
  • Cut stems a bit longer and but ensure to fit them in the vase. Then make a final cut at a forty-five degree angle with a knife-one to two inches from bottom of the flower stalks. Cutting them on angle helps to increase the surface area for water intake.
  • Don’t crush the stems when cutting. For thick and woody stems, garden shears may work well.
  • It’s best to make the final cuts in a container of warm water or under the running water. If you find difficulty in cutting the stems underwater, pick them up, cut them and place them in water again as soon as you finish cutting. Keep flowers in clean and fresh water until transferring them to your vase.
  • Tap water works well for vase. Distilled water is also fine but not soft water because it has high sodium which is not for the flowers.
  • Check the arrangement regularly and add water to vase as and when needed. Most of the cut flowers may get benefitted from the daily mist of water. It is best to trim a bit off the ends of stems and change water every alternate day.
