How to Effectively Deal With Common Moving Problems
How to Effectively
Deal With Common Moving Problems
Changing your location could be very stressful and
challenging, and even if you’re prepared to meet such challenge, a lot of
things could still go wrong.
Though you can’t predict what would happen when you’re
moving, you can still prepare yourself against common moving problems.
Here are a few and how to effectively deal with them:
1. Packing Problems
Packing (and unpacking) is the most stressful aspect of moving. Can also be the most
challenging part of it. Everything can get disorganized and you might end up
creating more problems for when unpacking in your new house.
The best way to deal with this is to start packing months
before your moving date. Start with non-essentials and keep all boxes organized
and labeled. If you want to completely avoid the stress of packing, then hire a
moving company to do it for you.
2. Personal Injury.
Bodily injuries are common when packing and moving. You can protect yourself by
wearing shoes with good arch support and full-foot coverage, and also wearing long
sleeves, jeans, and socks.
You should also have a first-aid kit handy in case you or
any other person involved eventually gets injured.
3. Furniture (and
other items) Damage.
If your moving was handled by a moving company, then they’ll
most likely compensate you for the damage. Hopefully, you read their policies
well and ensured there’s a place for compensation or replacement for damaged
goods.
Inspect your furniture and other items on delivery to your
new house and if you notice any damages, contact the company immediately and
report.
If your furniture got damaged in your own hands, then simply
call for a repair. Or replacement.
4. Furniture doesn’t
fit through the door.
If you forgot to measure your new door against your old
furniture, then the next step is to see if the furniture can be dismantled. If
it can, then you’re in luck. Simply dismantle it and take note of what goes
where so you’d be able to assemble easily inside the house.
If it can’t be dismantled, look for a large window through
which you can get it in. If that’s no option, then get help from a carpenter.
5. Nowhere to keep
your stuff.
That can be annoying, but the solutions are simple.
Give out items you don’t really use or you’ve not used in a
long time to a friend or to charity.
Otherwise, get creative and use other spaces around the
house like the garage and under the bed. Finally, keep some non-urgent items in
the box until you can invest in things like cabinet or lockers.
6. Unconnected
Utilities.
It’s easy to forget to connect utilities like water, gas,
electricity, before moving in. Where this happens, simply call your utilities
provider and explain your situation and how urgent it’s needed. They might give
you some priority and restore your connections in good time. Otherwise, shower
at a friend’s, use candles for light, and eat out till your connections are
back up.
7. Change of Address.
Where you’ve not told people about your new address, simply
text or email all your contacts about the change of address. And on your
important documents, simply go to the right channels and change your address on
them.
8. Damaged Property.
Moving in to find parts of the property damaged shouldn’t be
a cause for alarm. Before moving in, you must have exchanged contracts which
should have kicked off property insurance.
From the contract date onwards, the seller should notify you
of any damage that occurs on the property and claims will be made based on your
policy.
For your movers damaging the property? I can only hope again
that you made sure the moving company has general liability insurance, and not just
that to only cover your goods.
9. Moving Company
Problems.
Even though great moving companies take most of the stress
out of moving, sometimes you can fall into the hands of a wrong company and
encounter some problems. And sometimes the problems might not be the fault of
the company (e.g., road accident).
Firstly, do some investigation on the companies you’ve shortlisted
(or the company you’ve chosen). Look for reviews and ask friends and family if
they’ve used them. Look out for testimonials on their website. Any good moving
company should have these on their website, just as these movers in Nashville, TN, have
rightly done on their site.
Also ensure to call the company and ask questions about
their policy, in areas like handling, undeliverable goods, insurance and
protection, missing and damaged items, and payment terms.
These are 9 common moving problems and how you can deal with
them. I hope (for one final time) that you don’t find yourself in worse cases.
If you do, just stay calm and figure how to deal with the problem. There’s
almost no problem without a solution.
