How to disable and block a program from Windows Firewall

If you don’t want an application to access your computer network, then you can block it from the Windows Firewall. From the Windows Firewall, you can also disable it temporarily. To disable or block a program you need to have the administrator access, without administrator access you can’t do this. Here is how to disable or block a program from Windows Firewall.

How to disable a program temporarily:

1. Go to the ‘Start menu.’

2. Search for the ‘Windows Defender Firewall’ with the search bar.

3. Click ‘Windows Defender Firewall’ on the top of the result.

4. Click ‘Allow an app or feature using Windows Firewall.’

5. Click on ‘Change Settings’ button at the top corner.

6. Click ‘Yes’ on the prompt.

7. Find the application you want to disable in the ‘Name’ list.

8. Scroll down to view more program.

9. If still, you don’t find the program you want to disable, you can browse for the program manually.

To add an app or program in the list:

• Click the ‘Allow another app’ at the bottom.

• Click on ‘Browse..’.

• Locate to the app or program location you want to disable.

• Select the program file “.exe” format.

• Click ‘Open’ button.

• Click ‘Add’.

• Add the apps or programs you want to block.

10. Click and remove the left checkmark of the app you want to disable temporarily.

11. If the left checkmark box is already unchecked, it means the program is already disabled.

12. Don’t do anything to the right two check boxes of the app.

13. Click ‘OK’ at the bottom to save your settings.

This will disable the program and prevent it from running on your PC.

How to block a program from Windows Firewall:

You need to create a ‘New Rule..’ to block the program, here is how to create a rule.

1. Go to the ‘Start menu.’

2. Search for the ‘Windows Defender Firewall’ with the search bar.

3. Click ‘Windows Defender Firewall’ on the top of the result.

4. Click on ‘Advanced settings.’

5. Click on ‘Outbound Rules.’

6. Select ‘New Rule..’.

7. Mark the radio button of ‘Program.’

8. Click the ‘Next>’ button.

9. Select ‘Program path’ to block a specific program or select ‘All program’ for all.

10. Click the ‘Browse’ button.

11. Browse the location of the program or app.

12. Click once on the program to select it.

13. Click on the above address bar.

14. Copy the path from the address bar.

15. Then, click the ‘Open’ button.

16. Click on the program path field.

17. And replace the address before the program’s name with the address you copied.

18. Click the ‘Next>’ button.

19. Again click the ‘Next>’ button for two more times.

20. Give a name to your rule.

21. You can also write a description.

22. Then click ‘Finish’ to complete.

That’s it! A new rule is created, and the selected program or app will block.
