How to Determine Real Pearls?
Pearls are known where ever you go, although there aren’t much who knows how to determine real pearls. Contrary to the fact, real pearls are not perfect round or perfect smooth. They are formed in mollusk shells or the oyster shell.
When you come to see the real oyster shell with pearl on it, you will notice that the pearl attached to the inner shell is not completely round nor smooth, but you can determine its nacre. Perfectly rounded pearls are not real pearls at all. They can be Maurica pearls. They are glass stones, which have undergone the process of complete iridescence using shell scales.
When the pearl stone is taken from the shell, some jewelers will mold or shape the pearl to make it perfect round, but without this intervention, there is no way where pearls can be perfectly round.
Could this means that perfectly round pearls are sub-standard? Not really, as I have said, the jewelers use machine to mold the shape of a pearl after being taken from the shells. But as what have mentioned earlier, without those intervention, there is no way where you can get perfectly round pearls. However there are ways to determine real pearls regardless of its shape.
1. Rub pearls from each other. Real pearls after rubbing will produce a powdery like substance, but when you wipe it, it would disappear without leaving any marks or scratch from the pearls being rubbed.
2. Burn pearls. Real pearls will not burn, nor will disfigure or will change color.
3. Bite pearls. Pearls that are being bitten will not leave your teeth mark nor will it deform.
4. Cultured pearls are real pearls and color and nacre will last up to 10 years.
5. South sea pearls are real pearls, its nacre and color will last a lifetime.
However with proper care, even cultured real pearls will last a life time. Always take time to clean your pearl jewelries once in a while. When you do, it will save money and your precious pearl jewelry.
With so many individual selling pearls online, the choices can be overwhelming. You’d better be careful choosing and trusting them. I believe that there are more genuine sellers of pearls on the net than sub-standard sellers.
As a buyer you have to know the seller’s credibility first before paying any amount. Do not be deceived by its sparkling display, remember that true pearls aren’t that shiny. They are of course but not as shiny as you can see on the pictures.
