Do you struggle to get sleep? Do you toss and turn excessively on your mattress? Do you feel drowsiness during morning and daytime? If yes, then a wrong mattress (poor quality mattress) could be the main contributor towards your sleepless nights. Sleeping on a wrong mattress can take a heavy toll on your health, energy, mood and functioning during the daytime. Chronic sleeplessness can leave an indelible mark on your health, functioning and quality of life.

Many scientific studies have demonstrated that sleeping on a wrong mattress:

1.    Keeps you awake in the night

2.     Makes you toss and turn excessively

3.     Makes you feel sleepy during morning and daytime

4.     Saps your energy

Replacing your poor quality mattress with the best mattress (comfortable mattress) can put a stop to a sleepless nights. In UK, more than 3 million mattresses are replaced every year. This is a reason the market is inundated with a several types of mattresses most of which are manufactured by the companies with no formal expertise in mattress production technology, R&D and innovation. Most of these mattresses sold are copied or replica of other mattresses. Furthermore, the online mattresses sellers have confused the consumers more by making tall claims of their mattresses without any scientific evidence. It has thus become a minefield for the consumers to select the best mattress. Most of the consumers rely on their own judgement in conjunction with the salesperson’s advice when they buy a mattress.

A good quality mattress must have the following characteristics to provide you with a soothing sleep:

1.    Minimise your tossing and turning

2.     Promote a better temperature regulation

3.     Provide improved back support and alignment

4.     Reduce disturbances due to your partner’s movement

5.     Stop sagging and roll-off

Furthermore, a growing body of research has shown that you need either:

  1. A softer mattress if you sleep on your sides because your weight is usually on the edge and you need a softer surface to be comfortable in this sleeping position
  2. A medium firm mattress if you sleep on your back because your lot of surface area is being touched by the mattress or
  3. A firmer mattress if you sleep on your stomach (not recommended)

In general, a softer or medium firm mattress is ideal for most of you (side and back sleepers) as these mattresses:

1.     Exert a fewer pressure points on your body

2.     Help distribute your weight on a wider area

3.     Increase the blood circulation

4.     Prevent numbness

5.     Provide comfortable upholstery for sleeping surface

Due to the above reasons, you remain in the same sleeping position for a longer period of time which reduces tossing and turning in the mattress. Therefore, this helps you to sleep better and function well during the day time.

The thickness (height) of your mattress is very important as well as it affects how:

  1. Your mattress contours to your type of body, shape and weight
  2. Your mattress provides the pressure relief to your body

People with their weight between:

1.  14 and 18 stones require 10” mattress

2.  18 and 32 stones require 12” to 14” mattress

A mattress with 10” thickness can cater to a wide range of weight and shape of people. This thickness is appropriate because if the thickness of the mattress is higher than it contours to your body better for minimizing the body pressure points. As per Office for National Statistics, an average man weighs 13.16 stones (83.6 kg) and an average woman weighs 11 stones (70.2 kg) in England. So a 10” good quality mattress (considering all the characteristics as discussed above) can provide a good comfort and support to a couple with their combined weight up to 36 stones.

CONCLUSION

The market is flooded with a several types of fake and copied mattresses which make the consumers confused. Not every mattresses manufacturer can design, develop and produce a good quality mattress because it requires resources, scientific and engineering expertise. A good quality mattress must have all the ingredients as discussed above to provide you with a soothing sleep.
