How To Choose The Best Benchtop Thickness Planer

by Richard C. Internet marketter

We all know the importance of having quality power tools in our workshop. If you choose low quality, then you will quickly fall out of love with this tool, because it will work so badly that it is not satisfied. Worst case, it will crash quite sooner than you expect.

Therefore, it is very important to choose the best one, even if it will cost you a little extra cost. There are factors you need to consider very carefully before deciding to buy a specific planer. However, before we talk about these factors in detail, you need to know how a thick planer works.

A thick planer consists of a motor connected to the cutting head and roller assembly. The rollers help put the plank or lumber over the cutting head including a single pole with knives mounted at certain angles.

The motor turns the cutter head very quickly, so that it cuts off a portion of the thickness of the wood or lumber inserted into it, thus reducing its thickness to the size you want and creating a good finish depending on the the speed of the motor and the cutting head, and the sharpness of the knife. This can be illustrated from the diagram below.

As can be seen from the simple diagram above, there are several parts that work together to ensure that a planer works effectively (most of the important parts are written in red). Motor for rotating cutting head and roller; rollers help put the board over the cutting head; the cutterhead cuts off a portion of the thickness of the wood with the help of an attached knife; and the outfeed roller helps get the wood out of the planer.

Therefore, the parts that play a key role in the performance of the planer are the motor, the type of cutterhead, the quality of the knife and the flatness of the table.

Performance

How difficult and how well can you planer can choose to work continuously? What is the surface of the board like? Is it smooth or not.

The planer you should buy will be able to create a really smooth surface on the planks you plan on. Therefore, the end result will require less sanding if needed, to allow you to spend time doing other important things instead of spending efforts to roughen rough surfaces due to poorly planing machines.

Price

Price is another factor that can affect your decision. However, you must note that, as they say, You can really save money by spending money to get a better tool. A better tool may cost you more, but it will afford you more comfort, performance and durability that a cheaper tool may not.
