How to Choose Hospice Care Or Assisted Living in Sacramento

by Rose Mary Real Estate Blog Writer

Determining the correct end-of-life hospice treatment you or a loved one need may seem like a daunting task to take on during an already difficult time. I have received several comments from readers in a recent blog discussing hospice and palliative care who want to learn how to choose a hospice plan that is right for them.

Many of these readers have shared their hospice-care experiences with me; some good, and some bad. I've gathered some industry expert tips to help you take the guesswork out of choosing a hospice.

One of the first things to remember as you begin your quest for hospice care is to understand that hospices are essentially a business, and while they are a well-intended company, they want yours. That said, it is important to ask questions before committing to anything, and to get answers.

Differences between hospices are often difficult to determine since they tend to offer similar services. While memberships may sound impressive in state hospice organizations and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), they are available to any hospice. That counts is that a hospice is Medicare approved, as Medicare offers the basic quality care requirements.

The hospices must provide 16 different core and support programs to qualify for Medicare certification. Core services include counselling for bereavements, medical care and specialist services. Definitions of support services include continuous home care, physical therapy, drug management, and household services. It's also important to know if a hospice would consider your benefits.

The Hospice Blog has some helpful tips and advice that will help you streamline the search process. Firstly, find out who owns the hospice organization you are considering, and what the context of the company is. Is the Nonprofit, Profit or State hospice program operated? The form of ownership can influence the services a patient receives from a hospice. And when you visit a hospice, speak to the administrator.

An Assisted Living in Sacramento facility is generally described as a middle point between independent living and a nursing home. This description, however, does not give the full picture of the huge variety available in assisted living facilities. The range of structures, services, and communities that fall into the category of assisted living is actually quite astounding. These might include:

• Large apartment complexes

• Individual cottages

• Duplexes, triplexes, or fourplexes

• Converted homes or mansions

• Mixture of these different types of facilities

• Larger complexes offering independent, assisted, and nursing home care

What all of these variations have in common is that they offer an increase level of care and support to their residents, allowing them to continue living with some level of independence while still receiving the extra services they need to keep them healthy and safe.
