Since I have written many educational contents on many websites as well as on my blog, a lot of people assume that I would have opinions on engineering colleges as well. I got so many emails and finally I decided to write to help you choose a college that provides quality education. You can select the best college for you, once you know the key factors.
I have visited more than 50 colleges in Dehradun during my career so far, talked to so many students and I can say I have better understanding of the higher education in Dehradun. All these visits and internet browsing cannot really tell you everything about the particular college. So I have done two things: First, I have prepared a small list of colleges, which will make a significant impression on you. If any particular college is not included, this is because I don’t know enough about that college or don’t consider it as a good option for the students.

Second, the factors I have listed below:
The most important component in making a good college is a good faculty. So when you visit the website of a particular college, look for the following information:
- Faculty to student ratio
- Their qualifications
- What are faculty’s responsibilities? How many subjects the faculty takes? Are they doing some kind of research and publications?
Research is another factor for judgement about the quality of faculty. Research maintains a college standard up-to-date on the subject area, and makes understanding of the subject better. If faculty members are doing research, it shows that the college management is serious about the quality of education. Research can be measured by the following parameters:
- Faculty members are involved in publications like
conferences etc.
- Sponsored research projects by various funding agencies like AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education), DST (Department of science and technology) etc.
- Interaction with major companies like IBM, TCS etc.
- Workshops and conferences.
- Any accolade for outstanding research.
How is the Infrastructure at particular college? How good is the support staff to manage infrastructure. You cannot judge enough by visiting college website. The following are some additional points to keep in mind while selecting a college:
- Library in terms of both books and subscription to journals.
- Service at hostels. Do they have all the facilities like water, light etc?
- Do they have sports facilities on campus?
- Internet bandwidth
Curriculum of the college
If college is a university, they will have the flexibility to decide its own curriculum. Otherwise all colleges follow what the university prescribes. Some of the things to look for in the curriculum are:
- Courses: How many courses these colleges provide?
- Electives they offer: It will give flexibility to the students to select subject as per their interest.
