How To Choose A Top Medical Billing Service

One of the biggest frustrations facing any practice, large or small, is dealing with medical billing. Payer follow up is a huge responsibility, and it’s absolutely critical that it be done correctly, thoroughly, and efficiently or you’ll watch your revenue go down the drain. Some practice do their own billing in house, and while this may be okay, many times it isn’t—it’s often a better option to hire a professional medical billing service to handle this aspect of your business.

Why Go Professional

There are a number of reasons to choose a professional medical billing service over doing your own billing in house. First, medical billing can be complex, and doing it correctly is a must. Because of its complexity, if the biller misses some details or goes about billing in the wrong manner, it will decrease the amount of reimbursement your office receives. Whether that means overlooking a patient’s insurance or secondary insurance, or making a mistake when billing Medicare or Medicaid, it can be very costly.

The second reason is that these complexities change constantly as the government and insurance agencies adjust their own policies. It’s nearly impossible for an in house receptionist or accountant to keep up with these changes on their own. On the other hand, a professional medical billing service is able to keep their employees up to date on changing policies and regulations as they happen because it’s their sole focus.

Finally, it’s a known fact that using a professional service almost always increases the reimbursement your office receives.

What to Look for in a Professional Billing Service

There are two major things to look for in a professional billing service for your practice.

First, you’ll want to know about the qualifications of their employees. Do their hires come fresh out of medical billing school, or are they experienced? What is their training procedure like? How long has the company been in business? This will give you some idea of the quality of work they demand from their billing agents. Second, you’ll need a company that has great customer service. Pay attention to things like their availability. Are they always available when your practice is open? They should offer several means of contact, and they should be prompt in responding to messages.

Top medical billing companies are also more than willing to answer any and all questions you might have regarding their services and procedures. Look for detailed answers and patience when dealing with their customer service to ensure that they’re a longer term fit for your practice. Also, medical billing may vary by field or specialty. Ask about what experience the service has in your particular field of expertise. They may be able to offer your references, clients with similar types of practices. If not, you can always call around to other practices and inquire as to which billing services they use and whether or not they find themselves satisfied with the level of service.
