Outlook is a popular desktop application used by majority of the enterprises. Now, we can do the works without the help of online server since Outlook can be configured with the Exchange server. This facility has brought up more demand to Outlook. Normally, Outlook stores the data in .pst format where, PST stands for Personal Storage Table and stores all emails, contacts, calendars, notes and journals. But when configured with Exchange server, Outlook stores the data file from server in .ost format during offline mode. OST file format stores all the emails and other works in Outlook provided, does downloading only in offline mode. However, when the OST files get corrupted or orphaned, the user cannot read the files. For viewing the file, the user will need an OST file changer tool. More about OST:
OST stands for Offline Storage Table. As the name suggest, these are the files that gets downloaded only when in offline mode. OST files are generated in Outlook only when the Outlook is configured with the Exchange server. During the configuration, “Cached Mode” must be enabled else, the files won’t get generated. The OST file helps the user to work with the work even when there is no network or fewer networks. The OST files are the direct replica of the files in the mailboxes of the server. But, OST files cannot backup since it configured with the server. Another interesting thing with the OST file is; it cannot be opened in another system. An OST file gets open up only in those systems which it is configured with. The user cannot take the file and open in other systems.
How OST File Gets Orphaned?
There are many ways for OST to get orphaned;
When the mailbox at the server gets deleted accidently or if it is replaced with other Outlook account then, OST gets orphaned.
There is an encryption key in MAPI and Outlook which helps in synchronizing OST file with the server. If the key is missing or lost, the synchronization fails thus making OST files orphan.
If the MAPI or the Outlook domain setting is changed then, OST becomes orphaned.
When there is a failure in the hard drive at the server side, database gets corrupted and leads to orphaning of OST files.
