The town-wide yard sale takes place this Saturday. Everyone’s looking forward to it. The upcoming event is all the buzz at the local diner, library, and even among the moms picking up their kids from soccer. In fact, it’s been on the top of everyone’s minds for several weeks.

So what’s a small business to do when all the Saturday town “action” is taking place away from Main Street? How can you profit from activities that don’t pertain directly to your shop or happen near your place of business?

There are lots of ways to show customers you are part of the community and, as a result, part of their lives, too. One great way to show you care is to provide assistance before, during, and after a town-wide event. Here are some ways to play your part:

  • Actively promote the event in your advertising. Sharing information with your customers shows your business is invested in community activities and gives them a reason to walk or drive into town. Next time they stop by, they may even thank you for the reminder.
  • Point people in the right direction on event day. When customers stop by, hand out town maps and provide directions to those not familiar with the area. If the town provides custom maps with starred locations of key places, be sure to have those available, too.
  • Provide incentives for customers to visit you. With your advertisements and social media promoting town events, don’t forget to mention your services, reminding them that “Once you’ve tooled around the yard sales, come in and see our specials.”
  • Cater to tired customers. All that town-wide shopping can be exhausting. While you suggested clients stop in later, understand that they may be tired. Offer light refreshments or beverages and even extra seating, if possible. Customers will appreciate your consideration.

And, when it’s over, shoppers may not remember specific house sales, but they sure will remember your store and your employees’ kindness.
