Studies show that majority of young adults encounter serious problems to achieve financial stability when transitioning from college to adulthood. Consequently, they tend to rely highly on their family for financial support, even when they have full-time jobs. This raises the question of the ability of parents to support their children before it impacts their own financial stability. Furthermore, in their struggle to achieve self-reliance some college grads tend to discard some traditional objectives, like marriage and children as unimportant.

Although it seems hard to become self-reliant with this global financial instability it is not impossible because self-reliance is more of a mind-set than a skill-set. Therefore, anybody can achieve it if they put their mind to it. Here are some steps you should take on your path to a self-reliant mind:

Take responsibility

First and foremost, you need to take responsibility for your actions. Do not blame your teachers for not doing well at school, do not blame the system for ending up with a lousy job, or your parents for not pushing you too hard. If you make a mistake own up to it, do not run to your parents to fix it! It is time to realize that you are a product of your own choices and actions and you need to start from there. Another thing you need to do is to take responsibility for your obligations. It is enough that you rely on your parents for financial and residential help but let it be all. Keep your room clean, start cooking for your family. Do not rely on your mom to remind you that you have an appointment or to provide you with any assignment help. Do it yourself!

Define your goals

A self-reliant person lives its life by goals strictly defined by himself. Decide what you want your life to look like and start making actions accordingly. Divide your goals in long term and short term goals. Short term goals should be those weekly or monthly goals like finishing a specific assignment or acquiring a new skill that will help you on your way to achieving long-term goals like buying a house or starting your own company.

Be proactive

In order to achieve your goals, it is important to be proactive. A self-reliant person does not just sit and wait for them to realize themselves but does something about it. Nowadays, with the help of internet, it is easier to be proactive than ever. There you can find jobs, forums, courses, tutorials; you are just a click away from an answer to any question you have so make use of that and stop being complicated and start being practical.

Make your own decisions

Although it seems that it is much easier and less stressful when you let other people decide on your future and to let life just happen, it isn’t. So make your own decisions! Even if they turn to be wrong they are yours. Keep in mind that that feeling when you make a right decision will overwhelm all of those negative feelings you had when you maybe made a wrong decision and it will drive you to achieve all of your goals and live a self-reliant life you chose for yourself. Of course, it is wise to search for advice from other people but do not expect to make your decisions for you. Act as you believe is correct.

As I mentioned, achieving self-reliance after college nowadays maybe is hard but certainly not impossible. As a matter of fact, it is highly important for every college grad to achieve some level of self-reliance that will provide them with a sense of meaning and fulfillment that will encourage them to take further steps towards reaching all of their goals and living a successful life.

So do not wait! start now! Take responsibility, make your goals, be proactive and make your own decisions and witness your own transformation from college grad living in your parent’s basement to a fully capable, self-reliant and self-sufficient person you need to be!
