How to Access your Hotmail data after you die?

by Brooke Kimpton Technical Support Engineer
As harrowing as it sounds, it is the absolute truth. To this end, you won’t retrieve anything from the mortal plain; not your clothes, not your belongings and definitely not your email accounts. But what if all the account pertaining data could be kept alive as a memory?

Yes, you heard right, several Email service providers like Yahoo! and Gmail have provided with functionalities that allow the closest of kin to access the said account for the obtaining important information and to keep your memory alive. Our Email Accounts account for a lot more than messages. They entail important attachments pertaining to both official and governmental usage and even your financial information. Therefore, it is indeed paramount to give away the reins of such accounts to the nearest to kin.

Hotmail is the service meant for the professionals and the laymen alike. So in this case, for the security of the said account, it is prudent to operate them until the entire matter is settled down.  But what does it require?

Unlike Google and Yahoo!, you have to explicitly define a user’s death in the case of Microsoft. Therefore, to access the deceased Hotmail account, the family members have to go through the entire due process of the Next to kin to get access to the email data. As this low-down is essential, and the titular service provider considers breach of privacy a serious offence.

The Next to Kin order entail the following information from the family members:-
  1. Death certificate of the account user: This is to prove that the user is really deceased.
  2. Date of birth and other credentials: to maintain the credibility of the deceased user.
  3. Data that stems the fact the family members are actually real: There might have been cases in the past where fraudulent elements sneaked in to steal such accounts for the purpose of false identification. To this end, a proof of family affiliations is a necessity.

After you have accumulated all the requisite information to send to Microsoft, you would have to start the ‘Next to kin’ process. To this end, your family members would have to send all of the required data to msrecord@microsoft.com  and fill in the requisite form

After all the due process is completed, Hotmail would release all the data; the address book, the emails and the attachments on a DVD. But security is the major concern here as well, therefore no password would be included here, just the data, and the account would be closed later.
