How sleep affects your work productivity

by Logan S. Natural doctor

Sleep is essential to how performances in whatsoever we find ourselves doing, no matter the context. The difference between a person that prepares for a task and sleeps before executing it and someone who prepares and does not sleep is the output in the long run. The person who has a good sleep is more likely to perform better in whatever task he's given than the one who has not had good sleep. Similarly, a student who has had a good night sleep is more likely to assimilate than the one who has not had that privilege. The bottom line is that the fact that sleep plays a major role in the functionality of someone cannot be downplayed.

This piece aims at discussing sleep and expounding on how sleep affects your work productivity. I would talk about the lack of good sleep as well as the presence of good sleep and their cumulative effects on the work productivity of a person. Also things that need to be put in place to ensure good sleep would be looked into.

The longer the time we spend on work without time to sleep well, the more we are likely to underperform and the more we are prone to errors that ordinarily would not surface when there is adequate sleep. I am aware that there are jobs and assignments that might be sleep depriving and demanding, but with adequate planning, we might not have the luxury of abundant but sleep, but you are sure to get just enough sleep to ensure your productivity.

The effects of inadequate sleep are not farfetched, they are the opposite of the things we get when we have enough time to sleep. Insufficient sleep kills productivity as has been stated time after time. It is a basic barrier to productivity in different endeavors. One possesses less energy and is less creative and not motivated to carry out things well. These displays are easily connected to the people who lack sufficient sleep. You need not look far before you are able to make your conclusion that it is as a result of sleep deprivation. When good sleep is absent, not just the body is affected, but the mind as well as the emotions.

Without adequate sleep one is not able to get to that point in sleep wherein the brain merges memories, and that is not healthy enough. Also, there are points in sleep where sore muscles are repaired and soothed, but in the absence of good sleep, there's no way you are getting to that point and as such, you wake up with body pains wondering where they have come from. So we can conclude on the fact that to avoid these undesirable occurrences and enjoy the positive ones, make sure you get sufficient sleep.

It is not just enough that you get sufficient sleep, you also need consistent sleep. It follows that your sleep is as important as its consistency. If you have sufficient sleep but it's not consistent enough, you are not enjoying the best of what sleep has to offer and as such, your productivity is affected negatively. Though you might be better than someone who neither has sufficient sleep nor consistent sleep.

Another effect that sleep deprivation has is loss of profit. Loss of profit in the sense that when one's productivity is low, one's output is low and there's a loss on the part of the individual and the company at large based on the fact that work is not done efficiently.

You stand to enjoy a lot of benefits when you sleep well as opposed to what applies in cases of sleep deprivation. You are more likely to assimilate better as a student and learn at faster rates when you sleep well. Your creativity is also at its best as well as the fact that you are in the best state of mind to make good judgment and decisions. You are also less prone to errors and mistakes and you are able to correct them quickly and adequately in situations where they spring up. These and many more are things you stand to experience with the presence of good sleep.

The million dollar question now comes down to the 'how' of good sleep. What are the things that need to be done to get good sleep. These things can easily be achieved based on your willingness.

  • Finding and knowing the time when you are able to sleep best and enjoy sleep, probably based on the nature of your job or what have you. Having a sleep schedule is a good idea, and be sure to follow it consistently. Overtime, you would find out that you are getting better at this and consequently, your work productivity is affected positively.
  • Also, the environment in which you sleep in matters (as talkaboutsleep.com states). There are some environments and settings that encourage sleep and some others are just discouraging. Choose to make your room such that even the one who is most busy is compelled to take a nap. Make the temperature and lighting such that the room is sleep conducive.
  • Staying away from distractions like cell phones, Television, even friends because such moments are set apart for you getting adequate sleep.
  • Exercising well enough as well as taking in healthy food also contribute to you sleeping well. You surely don't want to sleep immediately you eat and are filled to the brim. A healthy diet goes a long way, even as far as ensuring good sleep.

Above all, adequate planning is essential to achieve all these things. Ensure you have good plans to achieve all these things as without a plan to do it is safe to say you are bit ready to achieve it. Why don't you ensure that you are more productive at work by getting enough sleep today.
