How should a keynote speaker perform?

by Ella Williams webdesigner

In general, when we talk about a keynote speaker, we think of a person who stands in front of a large mass of people for fifty minutes or so, and charges a lot of money for that. The term is actually quite wrongfully understood in the conference industry, as people tend to associate the term with inspirational speaker or motivational speaker, breakout speaker, business speaker, leader , so on and so forth.

This is not true, as many of the ones mentioned above couldn't do or wouldn't do all that. This kind of speaker is the one who must be capable of captivating the audience, catching our attention and setting the mood. The orator must spend time researching a certain industry, certain issues and the specific audience.

After his research is complete, the speaker may turn the whole experience into a memorable one, just for the audience, using humor, interaction with people or even artistic moments. So we can realize that his job is rather important for the whole meeting or event, since this speaker takes care of entertaining the audience.  If the keynote speaker is energizing and smart, he can set the right mood for the entire event.

Good performances are strongly related to intensive practice before the events take place. Strong confidence, right choosing of words and charisma are one of the main elements which define the right keynote speaker. When giving a speech, you should keep account of your body language, since people react strongly to it, without being  perfectly conscious about it. So use nonverbal communication fully, because people tend to imitate each other.

Don't forget that a good keynote speaker is defined by his sense of humor, which makes faces rinkle-free and relieved from stress, and that is a key factor when you want people to like you. You should work and play, not all work no fun. You should also reduce any uncertainty in your speech, as people follow those who have a lot of confidence not only in themselves, but in the future or in the audience standing there.  Being interactive with people makes you look good as it helps you avoid the feeling of not listening to people or not caring what are they thinking about. You don't want to carry an entire monologue in front of a mass just to have the satisfaction that you delivered your speech, don't you? Keep in mind that communicating with people resolves their need of being taken into account. Thus, we could say that a keynote speaker is similar to the master of ceremony for every event. He prepares people for what is about to take place in the event and gives a good start to it. You can get inspired from a bunch of people nowadays when it comes to speaking in public, and these people are the great leaders of companies, countries or simply successful men or women who are driven by an ideal in their path.
