by Abhishek Upadhyay Sr. SEO Specialist

As a communication service provider, you might come across different types of telecommunication and VoIP frauds. It’s very common nowadays that can not only hamper your business reputation but also cause you severe financial loss. Some of the common types of telecom frauds are as follows:

•             CLI Spoofing and Robocalling

•             Bypass Fraud

•             Call Hijacking

•             Denial of Services (DoS)

•             SIP Registration Attack

•             IP-PBX Hacking & IRSF

Often existing firewalls become insufficient to provide protection to communication service providers from various types of frauds and network attacks.

This is where the session border controller enters and maintains its position at the edge of the network providing an additional layer of security to packets.

Now let us understand what a session border controller is and how it works?

A session border controller (SBC) is software that is deployed to protect the IP Communications network. Earlier, an SBC worked to protect only the VoIP Network but nowadays, it is used in the controlling and regulation of different types of online communication such as messaging, VoIP, Video and other collaboration.

A typical SBC will work towards protecting the SIP Network. When the SIP messages pass through the SBC, encryption occurs, which makes it very difficult for hackers to target their networks.

SBC does its functions in the following ways:

•             A session border controller can prevent DoS Attacks

•             Service providers can configure an SBC to reduce traffic from blacklisted sources

•             SBC hides the internal topology due to which it becomes too much difficult for hackers to target the VoIP network.

These were some of the prime features of a session border controller talking about security. However, an SBC also has many other features which are required to run the communication business. The first feature is routing, which allows service providers to manage their day-to-day call volume efficiently. It also has various types of policy management systems. Moreover, as a service provider, you can upload different types of rate plan systems for your calling business with the help of an SBC.

Billing is another important element of an SBC, which comes integrated so that you can take care of your wholesale business efficiently. Invoice management for auto and manual invoicing is also an integral part of a session border controller. Although the main role of SBC is to guard your communication business against bad factors and frauds, routing and billing are absolutely necessary as it’s the two pillars on which your business rest in.

An SBC is the central software of a communication business, which has been designed to perform several functions. If you are into the wholesale business, you should choose the right SBC Software that is scalable. The software should support prepaid billing along with wholesale SMS and mobile top-up.
