How school activities impact your child and help in holistic development

by Sushila Birla Girls School A school was born to transform the educational fir

A couple of decades ago, schools were more focused towards the academics all year round with limited extracurricular activities. Many parents today would admit that education was far more simpler during their childhood. It was just about the 7-8 subjects, an annual sports day with a few special days for celebration.

Over the years, schools have evolved immensely to enhance the education experience of the children and parents. Education today, has become a much more wholesome experience with a focus on academics, extracurricular activities, empowering activities, celebration of National and International days and events that bring the children, parents and children together. Let us take a moment and list out some of these interesting activities with a brief note on how they are a requirement for the holistic development for girls.

Quiz Contests

Most schools today conduct quiz contests for children from an early age. They are often related to General Knowledge and sometimes, they are a little more specialized with science, math, geography, music or current affairs as the subjects.

Plays, Music & Dance competitions, Debates and Elocutions

From enacting various plays to participating in inter-class or inter-school music, dance, elocution and debate competitions, our children are offered several avenues to showcase their talents.

National and International day celebrations

Besides celebrating Independence Day, Republic Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Teacher’s Day, Children’s Day, etc., schools today promote the celebration of several other special days like Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, World Music Day, International Yoga Day, Grandparent’s Day and then some more.

Now that we have seen the evolution of the education system with the addition of several new activities, let us understand how these events are impacting our children.

Going beyond academics

Children exposing themselves to knowledge beyond the course work have been found to develop better. It is more holistic and gives children several underlying benefits which cannot be derived from simply reading the course material.

Confidence Booster

Children participating in activities make them more confident. They learn to perform in front of others. Many of us probably deal with stage fright. It is more because of the lack of opportunity than our inhibitions. Educators today, ensure that every child gets an opportunity to participate and experience performing in front of an audience.

Working with a team

A crucial life skill, there are several schools that conduct activities that promote teamwork. Whether it is a sporting event or a music and dance competition, working with fellow team members is required. Such activities promote boy or girl empowerment through group activities as well.

Time Management Skills

Often the school activities require practice, for which, children are allowed productive breaks during the school hours. With limited time in hand and a goal to accomplish in front of them, children develop the skill to manage time. They learn to handle multiple tasks at a time and achieve their goals without any extra time in hand. This is an advantage that benefits them as they grow up to become productive adults.

To sum up, while there are several new activities introduced at schools today, they are meant for the benefit of the children and helping them in more ways to become a better and smarter individual for the future.
