How LED lights work?

by Wipro Lighting Lighting Industry
In recent years, LEDs have become the most favorable lighting solution in a host of commercial sectors like manufacturing and automobile. According to a research, LED lights are expected to achieve a significant penetration rate of almost 61% in the global lighting market.
It is also claimed that the global LED market outlook is likely to reach as high as 78.8 billion dollars by the year 2020. These respective figures evidently flaunt the dominance of LED lights in the global lighting market. However, the benefits leveraged by LED lights are the primary reason for their popularity.

What is an LED?

Light emitting diodes or LEDs are small light emitting devices that fit easily into an electrical circuit. They are a type of an active semiconductor component that can emit light in different colors. According to experts, LED comprises of two terminals known as anode and cathode. When these terminals are connected to a voltage source with apt polarity, they produce varied colored lights depending upon the semiconductor material (typically aluminum-gallium-arsenide) used inside.
Unlike filament-based incandescent bulbs and gas based CFLs, the illumination in LEDs is exclusively governed by the electron movements in the semiconductor material. Thus, they can function on low voltage (and current) and save substantial amount of electricity.

How LED bulbs function?

LED bulbs or lamps consist of 4 main components i.e. an LED chip, LED driver, heat sink device, and an optical lens. LED chip is the primary light source that functions when electrical current is passed through the semiconductor material. The electrical current is regulated by an LED driver which ensures optimum proportionality of the light output with the current. According to the top LED lighting manufacturers in India, LED driver is a vital component of an LED bulb as it ensures long life of the device.
Furthermore, high-quality LED light bulbs are incorporated with a heat sink device that furnishes heat resilient capabilities. Unlike transcendent bulbs, LEDs don’t generate external heat. However, they are required to deal with the internal heat generated within the junction.
Since the internal heat can potentially impede the bulb’s life, the leading LED lighting manufacturers place heat sink devices that eliminate this heat through convection or conduction. For instance, various lights and LED accessories offered by Wipro Lighting comprise of active thermal management system for reduced heat emission.
LED bulbs also contain primary and secondary optics. While primary optics are placed directly on the LED chip, secondary optics are responsible for the collection and redistribution of light.
The best LED lighting manufacturers claim that affordable cost and increased energy efficiency make LEDs the best lighting solution for commercial usage. They are environment friendly and eminently supports the concept of sustainability in these unsustainable times.
