How is Shani Jayanti celebrated?

by Astro Ved Online Astrology Consultation
Shani or Saturn is an important planet in Vedic astrology. The birthday of Shani Bhagwan, the planetary deity, is celebrated by Hindus in India as Shani Jayanti. Lord Shani is one of the most feared planetary deities in Vedic astrology. This day falls in Vaisakha/ Jyeshta month and is observed on Amavasya (new moon day) during Krishna Paksha.

Shani Jayanti 2021 will be observed on 10th June. People worship Shani Dev on this day, and women often observe fast and pray for the longevity of their spouses.

Saturn’s Importance in Vedic Astrology

Saturn is the slowest among the planets. Many people fear it as they believe it exerts a negative influence on their lives. But, that is not true. Shani is a taskmaster and a disciplinarian. He brings good results if one is hardworking, dedicated, and ethical. Since he gives results according to our actions, he is also called the planet of Justice or Karma.

Every human being goes through small Panoti and Shani Sade Sati during their lifetime. These periods often bring great struggles and hardships. But when Shani blesses someone, the person will never face tough times and will be successful in a righteous manner. Also, Shanidev bestows on them great gains and good fortune. Saturn influence may be felt on various aspects of one’s life, including career. Thus, Shani will be benefic if it has a favorable position in one’s horoscope but will be malefic if placed unfavorably.

Legends About Shani

Saturn is the son of Suryadev (Sun) and Chhaya. Shani was not treated well by his wife and was cursed by Goddess Parvati. But the goddess realized her mistake later and blessed Shani that no important event will occur in a person’s life unless Shani dev blessed it. That occasion had to be blessed either with a favorable transit or an aspect to an appropriate house in one's natal chart.

It is also said that Shani is the elder brother of Yama (Lord of death). Hence, Shani may also take on Yama’s role in terminating a person’s earthly life. It also represents detachment as it is a spiritual planet and for the lessons it teaches people.

Shani Jayanti Rituals

Shani Graha Shanti Pooja and havan should be done on this day. One can perform the Pooja by going to a Shani temple or any Navagraha temple.

  • Take some Ganga Jal, Panchamrit, oil, and water in this order and bathe the idol of Shani.
  • Offer Navaratna necklace made of 9 gemstones following this.
  • Chant Shani Stotra or Shanti paath to appease Shani and pray for the removal of obstacles from your life.
  • Donate black items like black til, black clothes, and mustard oil.

Other Astrological Considerations

Saturn is the ruling planet of two Zodiac Signs - Capricorn and Aquarius. It represents servants and Air element. It is predominant in Tamasic Gunas.

Saturn has friendly relations with the planets like Mercury and Venus but is a foe of Mars, Sun, and Moon. It is neutral towards Jupiter and friendly with shadow planets, Rahu and Ketu.

Shani Mantras To Chant

To gain the blessings of Shanidev and avoid troubles, chant the Mantras below:

Nilanjan Samaabhaasam Raviputram Yamaagrajam |
Chhaya martanda sambhutam tam namaami shanaishcharam ||
'Om Shan Shaneshcharay Namah'.

When Shani blesses you, you have a good chance of winning conflicts.

One can pray to him on this day and also observe a fast if one wants to receive his blessings. This fast is very helpful for those who are affected by ' Shani Saade Saati'. Shani Dev keeps track of all the deeds done by a person and punishes or rewards them accordingly.

Often Shani's Sade Sati period is considered a very bad phase, full of sufferings and hardships. But the Vedic texts say that one should keep calm and fight adversity bravely during these times, and also pray to Shani. It can make a person strong and resilient, and they will come out of the bad period stronger and more confident and eventually attain success.
