How does an intelligent transport management system improve passenger experience?

by Manat Banerjee Digital Content Artist

Multi-modal integration, which is possible with intelligent transport, can make public transport more convenient.

Stakeholders, including the government and the public, want multi-modal integration to ensure convenience. NEC India’s intelligent transport management system can help integrate all the forms of transport.

With so many forms of transport available, inconvenience can be a major complaint among the people. The transport utilities also want the passenger experience to be better. Multi-modal integration becomes the only alternative in this kind of scenario.

Seamless coordination is possible with the help of an intelligent transport management system. The sub-systems in the ITMS, like the automatic vehicle locating system (AVLS), automated fare collection system (AFCS), vehicle planning and scheduling system (VPSD), and depot management system (DMS), can ensure better coordination.

The most important facet of multi-modal integration is ticketing. AFCS can ensure the usage of a common utility card for all forms of transport, ensuring that the passenger doesn’t have to buy tickets separately for all forms of transport.

The other sub-systems can help in ensuring last-mile connectivity, allowing better usage of the transport systems. For instance, the frequency of the transport utility can be made ideal using AFCS and VPSD. The exact ridership can be found using AFCS, and the routes can be optimized accordingly.

VPSD can be used to prepare optimal schedules so that the resources are used appropriately, and the passengers are able to get the required transport in a timely manner.

The transport utility can use the AVLS to provide information about the expected arrival time of the transport utility. Passenger Information System can be made robust with the help of this technology, which uses GPS trackers to ascertain the locations of the transport vehicles.

The DMS can be used to automate processes like roster preparation and inventory management. Automation of roster preparation reduces the manual errors that happen in duty allocation, thereby reducing instances of non-availability of crew. At the same time, automation of inventory management ensures that the transport vehicles remain in shape.
