How Can We Embrace Our Imperfections And Mistakes?

It might seem an obvious point to some of you to state that human beings are imperfect and it is their very imperfection that is their beauty; however, in today’s continually on-the-go, hypercompetitive society, it is a point that can also be easily forgotten.

Even if the word ‘perfection’ is not always explicitly used, it seems to be an ideal that we are all meant to be striving for; nor is that entirely a bad thing, as we can gain great satisfaction from working hard and witnessing the fruits of our labour.

However, the fact of the matter is that we are people, not machines. No matter how much our market-driven economy may prize the notion of ever-greater efficiency and productivity, human beings will always be imperfect, flawed and messy.

So, how can we learn to love our imperfections without falling into the trap of thinking that it can’t be helped and that making an effort to improve oneself is pointless?

Recognise The Messiness Of Humanity

The relentless drive for perfection does not only have an adverse effect on ourselves – it can also affect how we see others.

The truth is that we are all human, and that human beings are, and always will be less than perfect. We don’t know everything, and each of us will certainly make many more mistakes than the idealised version of ourselves that we may have in our heads.

When we can humbly admit to and accept our imperfections we not only become more authentic but the process also enables us to accept other people as they are and love them anyway. It isn’t just us and the people we know who are messy – every human being is.

See Your Weaknesses As Strengths

There is only one you; if there are ‘good’ and ‘bad’ versions of you, they co-exist within the person you are. All of your goodness, badness, beauty and ugliness make you unique – as do your previous experiences, mistakes and hurts.

It’s not just a case of ‘learning from past mistakes’;our choices in life show us what we are made of and help us to understand how our supposed weaknesses can actually be our strengths.

Set Out A Sure Direction For Yourself

We may not always make decisions that we regard as good ones in hindsight. But it’s nonetheless true that much of what we do is guided by our own personal moral compass – our intrinsic sense of what is right and wrong.

It’s important to follow that personal compass in the decisions that you make, staying true to who you are. While you can’t guarantee where your efforts and journeys will take you, you can at least control your own feet – and make adjustments as necessary en route to your goal.

Before I go, I would like to leave you a poem I wrote that I feel communicates much of the essence of what I have said above. It’s called A Pebble.

I am like this pebble because I too am multi-layered.

Each stage of my life to date

Has grown from the leading, sometimes wounded, edge of the one before

And each in turn has left its own mark.

I am not like this pebble because

As yet, my edges are not as smooth and rounded

Nor, I like to hope,

Have I yet solidified and stopped growing.
