How Can Water Damage In The Attic Be A Sign You Must Repair Your Roof

by Davina Hamilton Manager
Knowing whether or not your roof is need of repair might be difficult if you aren't aware of the different places to look. One of the easiest ways to tell if your roof is in need of repair is by checking your attic. Below, we will be going over why water damage in your attic can be a sign that you need to repair it.

How You Can Tell Based On Water Damage In Your Attic:

1. Leaks.

If you notice that there is water damage consistently occurring in your attic post rainstorms, you can pretty much guarantee that the water is getting in through your roof. Whether your roof has suffered damage to it which is causing water to creep in or something else is happening, you will know that it is a direct result of some type of compromise in the integrity of your roof. These leaks are very common and they can stem from even minor roof damage.

2. Structural Damage.

The only way for water to begin to creep in through your roof is if your roof has some sort of structural damage that is allowing it to happen. Your roof is designed to function in a way to protect your home from leaks. No matter what roofing material you have, the only way for water to gain entry in your attic is going to be through some sort of structural compromise in your roofing materials. Therefore, you will want to inspect your roof for potential issues that you are facing.

How To Spot Roof Issues:

1. Check For Light Creeping In.

One of the other ways you can tell whether or not you might have issues with your roof by checking your attic is if you notice light seeping in. Any light that is coming in through your roof is signs that you are dealing with gaps in your roofing material which is going to lead to a leaky roof. You should enter your attic during the daytime which will give you good indications as to whether or not you are dealing with issues with your roof.

2. Check For Stains.

Another great way to check to see whether or not you are dealing with leaks is by checking for stains in your roof. While you might not be dealing with full-blown water damage as of yet, stains are a good indication that you have a leaky roof that needs to be fixed. You should head to your attic with a flashlight and look up at your roof for stains and streaks. Both of these will tell you that you are dealing with issues in your roof that need to be corrected. Otherwise, you will eventually have full-blown water damage in the future.

Overall, there are plenty of things that you can do to check to see whether or not your roof is compromised. Having water damage build-up in your attic is one of the ways to really tell that you are dealing with structural issues with your roof that need to be addressed.
