How can I move to USA without a job?

by Muskan Gupta Visa Services Writer

USA is a dream of many people. Foreign people have multiple options for getting visas to work or live in the country. The easiest and most common option is to get a job in the USA. In the case when an individual has a job offer, the employer will file for temporary residency in the country, and you just need to abide by the rules and regulations.

Getting a job in the USA is not that easy. You must have exceptional skills, degrees, or knowledge or have some friends or family to network there. Many people thus wonder, if is it possible to move to the USA without having any job offer. Well, the answer is yes.

USA has two types of visa for people who wish to visit the country for more than just a vacation or holiday. Let's see the two broad categories first.

Immigrant & Non-Immigrant Visas

Immigrant USA visas are for people who are looking to permanently reside in the country and get a green card. This visa is often received based on a family-sponsored or employment-based visa. Once a person becomes a permanent resident of the USA, he/she can also apply to get citizenship in the country. The sub-categories are but not limited to visitor visa, student visa, intracompany transferee visa, etc.

Non-immigrant visas are for people who wish to temporarily visit and stay in the country for education, business, vacation, or even temporary employment. These visa holders are required to return to their home country and leave the USA before the expiration of visa dates. Sub-categories are but not limited to family or employment-based immigration, refugee and asylee, etc.

Individuals planning to visit the USA must apply for a visa based on their intentions and requirements. Now, let's discuss the process of moving to the USA without having a job offer in hand.

Process of moving to the USA without a job offer

Here are the two visa categories that'll allow you to work legally in the USA without any potential job offer.

EB-1 Visa

EB-1 visa stands for Employement-Based First Preference visa which involves individuals possessing great capabilities in certain domains like arts, business, science, sports, etc.

Those professionals who can show their exceptional skills need not require any job offer to get a USA visa. However, an EB-1 visa is not easy to obtain and has extremely competitive requirements. It's essential to go for a visa consultation before applying in the EB-1 visa category.

EB-5 Visa

EB-5 visa was introduced in the year 1990 to encourage investment from foreigners and improve the job market of the country. The EB-5 visa allows individuals to get USA visas based on two conditions:

  • First is to invest the pre-decided capital in the company or business of the USA.

  • Ability to show that invested amount will lead to creating ten jobs for USA workers.

You can opt for Direct Investment, where your skills and role will be required for the development of a project. Another option is to invest via the Regional Center Program, which means investing in an existing project in the country.

The process of immigrant and non-immigrant visas is a little complicated and confusing for new individuals. Hence, it is advised to visit the official State Department website and get updated information on such matters.

Parting Words

Overall, getting an EB-1 visa is a very competitive process, the skills need to be exceptionally good, and one must have evidence regarding the abilities in the field. On the other hand, EB-5 requires huge capital that is ready to be invested to create job opportunities. If you find yourself eligible for either of the visa categories, it would be wise to get a visa consultation and get all your queries sorted out.
