Olympics is an international sporting event where athletes from all over the world compete in various games. The ultimate goal of winning ‘Olympic Gold’ is a dream come true for every athlete who participates in the event. It is a prestigious event as 200 nations take part in the games at an international forum. It is a matter of pride for athletes who represent their nation in such events and win medals. India is among the countries which takes part in the Olympics and athletes from different sports are selected and trained to represent.

In the recently held Tokyo Olympics, India was able to win medals in several categories and the Javelin throw is one among them. Especially in the Tokyo Olympics, the Javelin Throw competition was a highlight for Indians because Neeraj Chopra, who participated in the event won Gold.

India also bagged several medals for various other games and the athletes like Mirabai Chanu, Neeraj Chopra (Gold), Ravi Dahiya (Silver), Lovlina Borgohain in the Indian men’s hockey team, Bajrang Punia (Bronze) and PV Sindhu won medals in the Tokyo Olympics and put our country on the global map.

Neeraj Chopra is the youngest Indian Olympic gold medalist and he is one out of two Indians who have won individual gold medals in Olympic history. Chopra, with a throw of 87.58 m, won the gold medal for Javelin Throw.

He was born and brought up in Panipat, Haryana, and enrolled in a gymnasium by his father after he was teased for his childhood obesity. It was much later, when he once visited Panipat Sports Authority of India, that a javelin thrower Jaiveer Choudhary noticed Chopra’s talent and decided to coach him. He was trained under Jaiveer Choudary for a year.

Then, he enrolled at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex for further training and began to participate in national-level competitions. However, it was only in 2013 that Neeraj Chopra entered the International competition and even won a silver medal in Youth Olympics Qualification which took place in Bangkok.

It was in 2016, he started training in Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala, a national-level training camp that transformed his journey. In fact, it was through his inclusion in the national camp that he was able to nurture his skills even better and participate in several international-level competitions.

Chopra has won several championships, including the Asian Athletics Championships 2017 with a throw of 85.23 meters. However, his win in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics has given him recognition nationally and Internationally.

Interestingly, India ranked 48th in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the highest in almost four decades. No doubt, Indian sports and athletes who participated in the event have taken India to an international level. We are slowly but steadily emerging as one of the country which are giving tough competition to other countries in the sports arena. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is a great example of that where Indian players won Gold, silver, and bronze medals in several games and competitions.
