How Are Power Transformers Driving the global Economy Motor?

by Manish Kumar Digital Analyst

An increase in distribution and transmission projects and grid connections among countries is being witnessed at the present time. For example, Eastern Africa Interconnector Project comprises the construction of a high voltage (500 kV) current transmission line between Ethiopia and Kenya. In addition to this, Ethiopia had planned to export the excess power and as of April 2018, 95% of the related project was completed. Other than these countries, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, and Columbia are also looking for integrating their power systems.

This is predicted to enhance power security in the Andean region, and is further expected to result in the expansion of the global power transformers market. A transformer is utilized for transferring power from one circuit to another via electromagnetic induction. The transference of power occurs without change in frequency. The term power transformer is utilized in an electronic system for providing a number of AC supplies of various voltages and values of current from public electricity supply.

Power transformers are unique transformers which are used for transferring electric energy in any part of the electronic circuit between the distribution primary circuits and the generator. These devices are utilized for interfacing step up and step down voltages in distribution systems. The demand for these devices is rising due to the rising need for reliable and safe power, urbanization, and increasing investments in renewable energy and new power grids across the globe.

The replacement of old power grids, majorly in countries including India and China, is also driving the demand for these devices. Between the two types of power transformers, the demand for oil-cooled power transformers has been higher in the past, since their utilization is considered safe in conditions with high voltage. The demand for these transformers is further predicted to rise in the years to come due to the swift growth of the global voltage transmission.

When it comes to power rating, the adoption of transformers with small power rating (up to 6 MVA) has been considerable in the past. These power transformers are utilized extensively in several small industries and can also be customized as per the needs of customers. Commercial and industrial sectors have been making significant use of power transformers since the past few years. Industries use these devices in captive power plants and commercial organizations utilize them for fulfilling in-house power needs. The power transformers market is primarily being driven by emerging economies, including Indonesia, China, and India, owing to the increasing research and development.

In conclusion, the demand for power transformers is growing due to the rise in transmission and distribution projects and the replacement of old grids in emerging economies.
