How AHU Filter in HVAC System Can Help Prevent Dust and Other Contaminants?

by Dale Bergin Blogger

Summary:

Air handling unit (AHU) used in the HVAC system can give optimum protection against pollutants released into the air to ensure fresh and contamination-free air. It improves indoor air quality and is becoming an important air filtration equipment for all facilities. Read on to learn more about AHU and HVAC filtration systems to trap harmful airborne particles more effectively.

Body:

The HVAC filtration system is a crucial component to remove air impurities or contamination. It is necessary to replace its air handling units regularly to ensure optimum indoor comfort and equipment performance. These minor components seem to be extremely useful for your home heating and air filtration system.

Air filters are typically made of fiberglass material or pleated paper/cloth encircled in a cardboard frame. Its primary function is to clean the air that circulates within the heating and cooling system. Popular air filters like HVAC filters and AHU filters can be extremely useful in capturing various kinds of particulates and contaminants that could affect well-being and comfort, including dirt, pollen, animal fur, mold spores, bacteria, and microorganisms.

Let’s discuss more HVAC and AHU to remove contaminants from the air more effectively.

Overview of HVAC and AHU Filter

AHU is an air handling unit in the HVAC system that is used to circulate air. HVAC is a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system wherein AHU is connected. As you can see, AHU is a part of HVAC so there is hardly any difference between the two equipment.

HVAC uses the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics. On the other hand, AHU is a large metal box that is used for air conditioning, perfect to create a comfortable atmosphere. It contains various components like blower/fan, heating, and cooling elements, humidifier, filters, heat recovery device, mixing chamber, controls, and vibration isolators.

Air handling unit comes in three kinds i.e., terminal units used for local purposes, make up air unit, which is a larger air handler and rooftop unit that is often used for outdoor use. It is generally installed on the roof of a building.

Difference Between AHU and HVAC

As AHU is a part of HVAC, it is hard to figure out a difference between the two. As we have discussed earlier, both filters work together to prevent particulates and other contaminants from the air.

·         AHU is a handling unit whereas HVAC is a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system

·         HVAC is a dominant unit in which AHU is integrated. AHU is a part of HVAC.

·         HVAC comes in various designs, from medium to large while AHU is simply a large metal box that conditions the air.

How to Select the Right HVAC Filter?

Not all air filtration systems are created equally and provide the same level of filter efficiency. Even though high-quality filters may cost more, they will serve the purpose of removing contaminants from the air.

Filter efficiency and performance can be determined by MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) rating. Standard MERV ranges from 1 to 16, alongside a number showcasing how well the filter will work to eliminate material from the air. Keep in mind, higher MERV rating means better filtration.

Make sure to invest in an air filter that is durable, feature-rich, and ensures to provide clean and fresh air to breathe. Separate air filtration units can also be installed with an HVAC system for superior air cleansing.

Conclusion:

The main purpose of HVAC filters is to improve the efficiency and longevity of the system, clogged with dust and airborne particles. AHU is a part of an HVAC system that can be used as an effective air filtration solution to improve air quality.

The scope of HVAC filters is broad and that’s why it is vital to choose a relevant system to breathe fresh and contamination-free air.
