Hoodies: What Makes Them So Popular?
Hoodies are one of the most popular items of clothing in 21st century Britain-in fact, on a global scale, too, they are exceptionally popular. Although they are the staple item of a youthful wardrobe, many other types of people wear them too. It is common to see hoodies sported by:
- Babies
- Toddlers
- Children
- Teenagers
- Adults (from age 21 - 121)
In short, although they belong to young people in particular, they belong to everyone in general. Everybody can wear hoodies, as long as they choose the right style for their age group. Furthermore, it doesn’t matter what gender you are, you can find a hoody for you: mens hoodies, women’s hoodies, heck, there are even dog hoodies! Although, to be fair, we can’t consider dog to be a gender!

The History of the Hoody
Hoodies have a long history. Many people mistakenly assume that they originated from an American Ghetto sub-culture, but in fact, this is untrue. If you want to go back far enough, hoodies were originally worn by monks - but we don’t want to go back that far, after all, the monk’s hoodies were just smocks with hoods. No, modern day hoodies - as in those made of sweatshirt material-actually originate in sport; namely, mountaineering. That’s right; the modern hoodie was first used as part of the protective clothing used when climbing a mountain. It acted as a mid-layer, with the hood acting as a base layer for the head. The head needs to be kept warm when in the mountains; because it is the area that loses heat the fastest; if people lose too much body heat then they can suffer from hypothermia, which in the extreme can lead to death. That’s a bit macabre for an article about hoodies, but it is true nonetheless.

Why are Hoodies so Popular?
- Ok, so we already covered one of the reasons why hoodies are so popular: they keep you warm. You cannot keep your head warm when wearing a sweatshirt, but you can with a hoody. This is perfect for colder climates, such as the UK. This accounts for the reason that they arrived on our shores in the first place, well, that and the fact that we have a strong skiing and snowboarding sub-culture.
- They are calming and comfortable. There’s something about being able to pull the hood over your head that makes the hoody so comfortable. It’s as if you can hide away from the world whenever you want. If you go into the town centre on a busy Saturday and you don’t want to be bothered by anyone, then hood up is the perfect way to avoid interaction. Alternatively, many of us love to wear our hoodies when snuggled on the sofa at night, or when we are feeling poorly, there is something very maternal about the hoody. As a woman, mens hoodies are uber-comfortable when we are feeling poorly; we simply adore that feeling of security.
- Culture: the hoody is part of our collective culture nowadays. Some associate them with misspent youth, but most of know that it’s simply a signature item stating the world that we belong to the laid-back demography. Because they are a part of our culture, they are naturally fashionable. We wear them as part of our casual wardrobes and as a fashion status.
