Who is a Home
Based Educator?
There is no age

educator who takes care of pre-school aged children. It is a job to provide a
homely environment for growing kids and teach them basic knowledge in a playful
manner. The educator is associated with a licensed organization responsible to
refine skills and look after the development of children in the homely
environment.
How to become a home
based childcare educator in NZ?
The journey to
becoming a home based educator is started after registration with IRD which
provides an IRD number, a unique tax number by the Inland Revenue Department of
New Zealand. Being a home based educator, you are responsible to pay your own
tax. If you have a proper receipt of your expenses, you can redeem your tax
amount. The tax return will be filed in March every year. Home based educators
are self-employed but are sub-contracted with a licensed children educator
organization.
How do they
earn?
In New Zealand,
it is common that both mother and father are working. In this case, children
below pre-school age need care and homely feeling environment. So the culture
of the home-based educator is very popular in the country. These educators
charge an hourly basis. They are flexible to work according to their comfort.
The hourly payment may range from $5 to $10. It depends on educators how much
they charge. Those who know the art of negotiation can earn well. Working hours
can be day or night, depending on educators. They can earn more if they stretch
their working hours.
Work
Responsibilities
Enrolled
educators can take care of up to 4 children at a time of under age 6. Out of
them two can be of under age two. The organization that leads these educators
can give permission to take care of their own children which is unpaid.
Educators have to take care of the overall development of children. They have
to feed children proper nutrition and teach in a fun-loving environment. They
need to motivate children to play using natural materials like seashells
instead of plastic and other material toys.
Educators have
to maintain a diary or keep a record of the child's learning. Both educator and
parent sign should be in the sheet that shows details of care provided by the
educator. Educators need to stay connected with the program coordinator at
least once a month to discuss the work. They may need to attend workshops
organized by the childcare organizer.
