Historical Significance of Amritsar

Amritsar is a must-visit destination for most of the travelers as it is one of the calmest and religious places. 1. Golden Temple: Known as a pilgrim site for Sikh community, the Golden Temple is situated in Amritsar, the holiest city. The two-storied structure of Golden Temple comprises of almost 400 kg gold, and is surrounded by a huge lake, named as sarovar that signifies holy water. Devotees can take a dip in the tank for purifying their soul. Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikh, is placed inside the temple. The inside of the temple is beautified with gold and marble works. Devotees should cover their head and then enter the temple.
2. Jallianwala Bagh: It is a garden spot of Jallianwala Bagh massacre situated near to Golden Temple complex. Built in 1951, the public garden is visited by many tourists. It includes a memorial where visitors come to pay homage for those killed in this incident. People can also see a Martyr’s Gallery that adds portraits of few freedom fighters. They can also view bullet marks on the Bagh’s walls where firing of 1600 round bullets were shot by the troops.
3. Harmindir Sahib: Any person, be it tourists or devotees can visit this Sikh Gurudwara, known as Sri Darbar Sahib, the holiest pilgrimage of Sikhs. This gurudwara is reflected upon as an elegant architecture that exhibits superb combination of Hindu as well as Muslim architectural designs. The main attractions to be seen inside the shrine include sarovar, delicate gold and marble carved arches and doorways, and circumambulatory pathway that directs toward the Har ji Paure [steps of God].
4. Durgiana Temple: It is a Hindu temple located in Amritsar, also named as Lakshmi Narayan temple that has idols of Hindu Goddess Durga, Lord Krishna, and Lord Vishnu. At times, this temple is also addressed as Silver temple because of its carved solver doors. 
5. Tarn Taran: Considered as one of the most religious sites for Sikhs, Tarn Taran is situated nearby Amritsar. The fifth Sikh Guru, Sri Darbar Sahib Tarn had established various historical gurudwaras. This divine shrine is prominent for its sarovar that is the biggest holy tank in the whole world. Other main gurudwaras placed in the city covers Gurudwara Takkar Sahib, Gurudwara Bibi Bhani Da Khuh, and also Gurudwara Lakeer Sahib.
6. Akal Takht: Akal Takht signifies Throne of the Immortal, where Akal alludes to Timeless One, and Takht refers to the throne. The stone of Akal Takht building was placed by Guru Hargobind Sahib in 15^th June, 1606. Known as one of the five seats of Sikh authority, Akal Takht is the superior, followed by other takhts- Keshgarh Sahib, Patna Sahib, Hazur Sahib, and Damsama Sahib. Akal Takht at present is a 5-storey modern construction, embellished with marble as well as gold-leafed dome. 
7. ISKCON Temple: ISKCON temple is a popular spot for tourists in Amritsar. It is a walking distance from Golden Temple. Anyone can visit the temple for regular prayers. This temple was set up by The International Society for Krishna Consciousness. People can also buy spiritual items and books, pictures of Gods, Prasads, and T-shirts from the stalls placed in the temple.
8. Lal Devi Mata Mandir: This mandir is dedicated to female Saint Lal Devi. The Hindu temple is located within the Rani Ka Bagh, and looks similar to Mata Vaishno Devi Temple at Jammu. This temple is worth visiting! Those who can’t visit Vaishno Devi can go to Lal Devi Mata mandir for giving puja.
9. Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum: Earlier this was a palace of first king of Sikh empire, but gradually changed to a museum. It is surrounded by Ram Bagh garden. The museum includes armors, arms, old coins, paintings, and manuscripts, belonging to Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Beautiful paintings are exhibited in the museum galleries that display camp and court of the king.
