High on Style Kurta Pyjamas to Nail the Traditional Look

by Vikram Sharma Textile designer

Kurta pyjama is a traditional and popular men's wear in India. This two-piece garment was first seen in India during the mediaeval era, around the time the Mughals arrived in what was then Hindustan, which they went on to rule. Many cultural influences from the Mughal way of life permeated the Indian way of life, including various clothing styles for men and women.

Traditional kurta pyjamas over cotton vest eventually became the staple clothing for men, particularly in daily wear. Western clothing has taken precedence in menswear over the last century, particularly in urban Indian centres. However, when it comes to traditional Indian wear, the men's kurta pyjama is the obvious and most appropriate choice. It is still worn not only for traditional ceremonies, festivals, and weddings but also for everyday wear.

The traditional kurta pyjama for men is made up of two parts: the upper wear garment known as the kurta and the bottom wear garment known as the pyjama. The kurta is a loose, long shirt or tunic that has remained largely unchanged since its inception. It is made by combining two pieces of cloth into a single loose, straight-fitting garment that ends just above the knees, though longer and shorter lengths are also available.

It has long sleeves which come with a distinctive straight cut (as opposed to tapering towards the wrists) and are always hemmed and trimmed rather than cuffed. A kurta can be worn with a lot of different Indian and western trousers but typically, it is paired with a loose and comfortable pyjama. The pyjama comes with a drawstring that allows it to fit in a manner that is neither too loose nor too tight.

The versatility and traditional design of the kurta pyjama for men are its main draws. It is, in fact, a very comfortable outfit. It also has an ethnic, traditional appearance. Many people wear it only for traditional ceremonies and events, but the younger generation is increasingly opting for the latest kurta pyjama designs to wear on a daily basis. Wearing this outfit on a daily basis is an expression of many men's commitment to their heritage and culture; for others, it is a fashionable statement of their preference for ethnic fashion.

Myriad of Choices

There are various kurta pyjama styles available on the market, which can be distinguished by a variety of factors ranging from sleeve length and neckline to fabric, colour, and design. The silhouette is consistent across the market, but the look can be altered by adding a vest, dupatta, or waistcoat to the outfit. Designers use this neckline to give the kurta pyjama or kurta and cotton lungi a unique look. Many designer kurta pyjama options have high collars, deep v-necks, and other eye-catching variations that add to the overall look of the outfit.

The fabric has a significant impact on the overall appearance of this outfit. The majority of daily wear kurta pyjamas are made of a comfortable and breathable cotton fabric that is ideal for the loose, straight-fitted kurta outfit. Other inexpensive materials include rayon, polyester, and cotton blends, as well as indigenous varieties such as khadi and jute, which have a rough and appealing beauty of their own.

Fine fabrics such as georgette, organza, and various types of silk are used at the upper end of the kurta pyjama scale. The opulent and stunning designer kurta pyjamas for men may even be made of high-end materials such as intricately woven brocade, smooth satin, and rich velvet. Vibrant printed fabrics can also be used to achieve a more out-of-the-box look.

Kurta pyjama designs are typically subtle and ethnic. Decorative trims, borders, and embellishments are typically created along the kurta's edges and along the neckline, using regional work such as resham, zari, zardosi, and patch border work, to name a few.

Style Tips

The traditional kurta pyjama has always been an excellent festive wear option for men, but it has recently become a trend as well. Men can wear kurta pyjamas for a variety of occasions because they come in a wide range of styles.

Printed and dyed varieties are typically preferred for everyday wear, whereas embellished, embroidered varieties are preferred for formal occasions. For special occasions, men can even wear a plain and simple white or beige kurta pyjama made of silk. They can complete this ethnic look with leather mojaris and a red men's wear dupatta.
