================================

I have been a graduate student and Ph.D. student at Harvard University for 7 years. I have also tutored many undergraduates and met them up close. They may be the most representative of the elite youth in the United States.

There was a Jewish girl who left a deep impression on me: it was in 1990. In order to obtain a higher honorary level (Summa Cum Laude) graduate title, she had to write an undergraduate thesis. Generally, the "student dog" wears a T-shirt and jeans casually, but she always wears an expensive coat, carries a brand-name bag, and puts on delicate makeup; the second impression is that she doesn't understand anything.

She knows almost nothing about some basic subjects. But she dared to ask anything. She was not ashamed at all. She didn't feel afraid of being despised at all. What's more "nonsensical" was that she dared to ask others. The computer data at that time was stored in a disk as big as a washbasin, and the heavy disk needed to be put on the disk drive for operation, but she often didn't do it, because we "worked hard" for her.

Whenever we see a pile of disks scattered in the laboratory and a handbag next to it, we know that "Miss" is coming...

The second child is a relative of mine. She went to middle school in China and then returned to the United States to attend Harvard University. Her academic performance is not outstanding. When she first started high school in China, she often failed in mathematics. So what qualifications does she have to be able to study at Harvard? It is her ability to think. Her favorite class in China is actually politics, and she often debates with teachers in politics, literature, history and philosophy. Coupled with a wide range of reading and a unique perspective, she easily won the favor of Harvard interviewers, while other schools with rigorous learning styles are not interested in her.

After attending Harvard, she was even more comfortable-participating in rowing competitions on behalf of her college. On weekends, she was even more busy, attending various gatherings and exchange meetings, even when her father came to make appointments.

Of course, not every Harvard student is so ambitious and walks freely in various relationships. I once met a Harvard student whose father was a judge of the US Federal Circuit and an alumnus of Harvard. After he graduated, he became a masseur near the Harvard campus, similar to our Peking University students selling pork, but this is not big news in the United States, everyone seems to understand and agree.

Having said that, this relative of mine once told me frankly that the students of Harvard as a whole are a bit different from those of other Ivy League universities, including Yale, MIT, and Princeton: Harvard students are always pretentious and always have a drive. , Impulsive, and dare to ask and dare to speak-ask if you don't understand, speak if you want I suddenly realized. This may be the most representative style of American elite education.

So, what happened to the first girl? One day four or five years ago, I suddenly saw her speaking on TV-and she was the COO of Facebook! She is now the famous Shirley Sandberg!

Therefore, I have been reflecting on whether our understanding of American elite education is biased. In our traditional education, students are required to be respectful and cautious in their words and deeds from an early age. They feel ashamed when they ask "low-level questions", and lack the spirit of going forward and speaking.

And Harvard University is not only a typical American education, but also a place for cultivating leadership talents-leaders do not necessarily need advanced professional backgrounds. The important thing is to dare to ask questions, dare to express opinions in front of everyone, and mobilize the team. All kinds of people here identify with themselves and encourage everyone to move forward. This is the embodiment of leadership.
