Here’s why water-based finishes are best for amateur DIY woodworking
by Stains Paints WRP is America’s Leading distributor of MohawkAs an amateur woodworker, if you’re taking a do-it-yourself approach to finishing wood, you must be wondering – which finish should I go for? Short answer: Water-based.
Water-based wood finishes are all the rage today. Spurred by environmental laws, most major wood stains and finishes manufacturers now offer some type of water-based finish, and some specialize in them.
Is it any good?
Water-based wood finishes are arguably the best and for good reasons. For one, high-quality water-based finishes (such as General Finishes wood stains) can effectively conceal minor imperfections on the surface of the wood. Its application also helps stop the natural aging process of the timber, so that the wood’s color doesn’t fade away with continuous exposure to outside elements such as wind, rain, direct sunlight, snow, and even destructive UV rays!
Everyone knows that wood acts like a sponge and will naturally absorb anything spilled on it. Not when it’s finished with a water-based coating, though. A glass of wine spilled on a finished table will be no issue but had that wood been unfinished it would be stained for good.
Okay, how to apply it?
Just like other finishes. You can apply the finish using a brush or a spray and then seal it with a high-quality clear undercoat (like General Finishes Enduro White Undercoat).
Using a water-based wood finish will surely give your woodworking project a favorable outcome.
