Guide To Outdoor Lighting
When someone says 'lighting' people often think of indoor lights - fittings such as pendants and lamps. But outdoor lights are just as important, and can often transform the mundane into the beautiful.
Outdoor lights should be selected to do 4 different tasks, and often the lights handle more than one task at the same time:
- Brightness: to ensure that an area is well lit.
- Safety: to provide security against intruders and from accidents.
- Aesthetics: to make a place look beautiful and elegant.
- Delineation: to let people know where paths and edges are.
Outdoor lights can be divided into 3 different types:
- Wall lights
- Garden lights
- Overhead lights
Wall lights are mounted on walls, and include bunkers, bulkhead lights, sensor lights, flood lights, spotlights, up-down wall lights, fixed wall lights, adjustable wall lights, recessed lights, lanterns and coach lights.
Garden lights are found in the yard, and include bollards, spike lights, post lights,
deck and patio lights, step lights, path lights, driveway lights, portable outdoor lights and low voltage specialized lights.
Overhead lights include outdoor ceiling lights, outdoor high bays, overhead flood lights, waterproof battens and outdoor downlights.
