Great Tips for Making the Most Out of a Gorilla Trekking Safari

by Safariuganda Africa African Crane Safaris
Going gorilla trekking is no doubt one of the best wildlife experiences you can ever hope to have. Uganda and Rwanda are home to families of mountain gorillas, and people who want to see them up close in their natural environment are required to purchase permits. Ensure that you have the current permit price before you set off to avoid getting disappointed. There are a couple of things that you should keep in mind to ensure that you get the most out of your adventure.

Tips for Gorilla Trekking Success

First and very important is that you need to be honest with yourself about your current fitness level. Gorilla tracking will require you to go to high altitudes, sometimes up to 3000 meters above sea level. It is not unheard of to hike 10 hours to spot a family of gorillas. You need to make sure that you are up to the challenge. Fortunately, you can choose the length of your hike so make sure that it corresponds to your fitness level.

Do your research and articulate any specific thing you would like to see on your hike. There are various gorilla groups so get as much information as you can about which ones are available. If there is a specific group you want to see, such as a family with newborn babies, express your desire in advance and you will be guided into the available options.

It is a good idea to hire a porter even if you do not mind carrying your own bag. Gorilla trekking can be exhausting especially because you will be going up steep slopes for most of the trek. A porter will come in handy to help you carry your bag as well as offer support on steep parts of the hike or slippery slopes. Most of these porters are ex poachers so hiring one for your hike does some good for the gorilla families.

Lastly, dress appropriately for the hike. Some of the items of clothing that you will likely need include thick pants, long sleeved shirts, comfortable hiking boots and a thick pair of gloves. These will keep you protected from insects and stinging nettles. Keep your bag light. All you need for the hike is two bottles of water, camera, sunscreen, hat and a small snack. You can consult with you guide on what to carry in your back pack depending on the length of your trek.
