What exactly is Virtual Reality and Why does it matter?

‘Virtual Reality' was coined in 1982 in a Sci-Fi novel and has since gone on to replace the ‘Artificial Reality' by which it went by prior. Virtual Reality is all about artificially replicating some of the human senses like Visuals, Touch, Hearing and Smell. While all of the Virtual Reality headsets do not possess these features, rapid progress has been made over the past couple years. Special stereoscopic displays are the trademark signs of Virtual Reality and other devices such as a keyboard or a wired glove could also be attached as additional inputs to these Virtual Reality devices. Virtual Reality is primarily known for its ability in simulating the 360-degree experience of any environment and the 360-degree videos recently gaining popularity on Facebook are a great example of the experience.
Virtual reality glasses and head mounted displays have jumped out of the realms of sci fi and into reality in recent times. They are not ubiquitous, or even part of the mainstream yet, but they are definitely gaining something of a cult following.

How does Mobile VR Work

Your iOS or Android smartphone becomes the window into the virtual world. Once inserted into the Merge Goggles, your phone tracks your head movement so you're able to look up, down, and all around in a virtual environment. Most mobile VR apps are downloaded from the iOS and Android appstores, just like any other app. Once downloaded, simply launch the app, enter into VR mode (if not already), and slide your phone into the Merge VR Goggles. In addition to head tracking, VR apps also split the screen into left and right images that appear in 3D when viewed through the Merge Goggles. This 3D effect, together with headtracking, create a feeling of immersion, making you feel as if you're actually there.

Interacting with a VR app

Interacting with VR apps is easy once you get the hang of it. Most apps use one of two interaction methods. The first and simplest is gaze-based interaction, you simply look at what you want to select, and hold your gaze on it for a second or two. The second type of interaction is by using button inputs on top of the Merge VR Goggles. In this case, you'd look at what you want to select, then press a button to select it. The buttons can also be used to perform an action like pausing a video or controlling a character. Visit Merge Start, a place where we provide tips and videos that will help you understand how to interact with the experiences. You'll get the hang of it in no time.

A device so stunning and so easy to use it re-imagines and redefines the student experience. It embodies all that we aim to achieve at the University of Tasmania.
Docoss is new emerging company in smartphone which launched its virtual reality product at very affordable price.

I believe an image speaks a thousand words. This device speaks more than any pamphlet or handout – it speaks to our sense of adventure. Once a Smartphone is inserted into the VR Viewer and the application loads up, the VR Viewer application senses movement and rotates the image accordingly, creating the illusion that you are experiencing stunning campus images. It's as if you were standing right there. For more information visit :- http://docoss.com/
