Government Encourages Biogas Production to Curb Pollution

by Vivaan Pathak Manager
Poor air quality in North India has always been a huge threat and concern for the Indian government. Deteriorating air quality in New Delhi is known to everyone and Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar highlighted the threat later last year. Speaking at a virtual inauguration of India’s first demonstration plant producing biogas from biomass; Javadekar said that the Indian government encourages the use of such technologies in order to reduce pollution.

He also added that stubble burning increases air pollution a big time and the Indian government is working on all frontiers to nip pollution in the bud. Compressed biogas plants are the need of the hour. There are plenty of sources of pollution such as industrial waste, vehicular waste, construction waste, and stubble burning among others. Javadekar underlined the need of technological innovations to get rid of pollution. Central government’s PUSA institute has come up with a decomposer technology which is designed to convert stubble into manure. The trial has already started and the pilot phase of experimentation is on in four Indian states including Delhi. He also said that this technology is an amazingly economical and effective way to manage crop residue. He also seemed hopeful that the future will bring multiple innovative ways to fight pollution taking place due to stubble burning.

He also spoke about India’s ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ and that the nation is moving towards self-sufficiency with an increased focus on solar energy and other renewable energy sources such as biogas to bio CNG plants. Prakash Javadekar said that the country strives to formulate innovative technologies to address this major concern.

As we all know India has already signed 900 MOUs to setup CBG plants in the country. Looking at the initiatives taken by the Indian government, we can be hopeful of seeing more innovative ways of pollution control in future.
