Government and co-operative societies in India support flood victims

The visuals flashing on news channels last week were terrifying. Images of the entire village being submerged in water sent shockwaves across the country. It was reported that 213 people were killed due to heavy monsoon in western India. The officials feared that the death toll would only increase. Immediate help was sent by several co-operative societies in India and the government to the flood affected areas.

Statistics reveal that almost 130,000 people were relocated to safer grounds in Gujarat following the effects of heavy rainfall. The government as well as certain co-operative societies in India extended help by hiring chartered helicopters and providing the victims with food supplies. These helicopters and boats discovered 25 bodies, including 17 members of one family from two submerged villages in Gujarat.

Support Extended

The Government surveyed the devastation and pledged to provide maximum relief efforts and assist the residents in the flood-affected regions. The north-eastern states of the country such as Arunachal Pradesh and Assam had also been affected due to the torrential rain. Nearly 4 lakh people were reported to have been affected by the monsoon floods. In fact, one of the few remaining habitats of the one-horned rhino, The National Park, was also 90% submerged in water.

Co-operative Societies – The Helping Hands

It has also been observed previously that several co-operative societies in India contributed their bit by providing relief to the flood-affected regions. Last year, one of the major co-operatives in India distributed flood relief kits to the tune of Rs. 36 lakhs to around 3000 people in southern India.

The volunteers of this foundation distributed food supplies, clean drinking water, and medical kits in the badly-affected areas. They not only helped several villages of Rajasthan such as Sirohi and Jalore, but also provided relief to Banaskantha district in Gujarat. They also organized medical camps and distributed over 400 medicines free of cost in Dhanera and Jasra villages. Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje appreciated the work done by them.

Flooding kills a lot of people in India every year. Better development standards are needed in the country to save lives of people. Co-operative societies in India with their aim to uplift the society contribute tremendously whenever a situation of urgency arises. Their efforts help save lives of people and are also a great support to the government during tough times.
