Goliath Cranes: Design, Construction, and Working

It’s been more than five decades that Goliath Gantry cranes have been popularly used in the shipbuilding industry. Generally, Goliath crane are used to handle extremely heavy loads. With every passing decade, their designs are evolving and had become bulkier as the size of a ship with their building blocks increasing with every new design. The latest designs of these large metallic cranes are known to have an overall lifting capacity of 1,600 tonnes, lifting height lying in the range of 50 to 115 meters, and span of up to 210 meters.

Depending upon its construction and load carrying capacity, Gantry and Goliath cranes can be used as a single girder, double girder, or semi-goliath crane design. A double girder EOT crane is usually used in areas where there is a requirement of the heavy lifting of the objects. They are majorly used in construction sites, harbors where heavy cargo boxes are lifted and moved etc. Gantry cranes are also used in shipbuilding and in other industries like steel plants and mills.

The Functioning Mechanism

The movement that occurs on the lifting axis of the Goliath crane is supported by a high-torque motor placed on the girders that are high capacity. Movement occurring in the direction parallel to the girders are supported by a different motor present in the motor casing of the motor supporting the lifting movement. This motor powers the movement of the motor casing to-and-fro on the girder. The motion on the third axis is carried out by the motor that is mounted on the guide rails; the same rails where the entire Goliath gantry crane is mounted.
